Chelsea strolled through to their 6th Premier League title last season and one of the most important players for the squad in their run to the finish is Spanish star Pedro. The former Barcelona man was in sensational form under Antonio Conte and was the first choice for the Italian. He was brought in by Jose Mourinho, who is now at Manchester United.
The Portuguese manager needed someone in a similar role at Old Trafford and decided to spend on Borussia Dortmund’s assist king Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Though in his first season in England, the Armenian international has been in decent form for the Red Devils but has he had a similar impact as Pedro’s at the Bridge?
With no European football for Chelsea, Pedro got to make 35 appearances, acting as the first choice for his manager. Mkhitaryan, still adjusting to the challenges made just 24 appearances in the competition. The Chelsea man has 9 goals and 9 assists to his name, to add to his 31 key passes and 40 chances created. Mkhitaryan, who played in a variety of roles, has just 4 goals and an assist to his name.
He has also failed to establish himself as the creative force at United and made just 27 key passes, creating 28 chances all season. However, he was slightly more accurate with his passing, with an accuracy of 84% compared to 83% from Pedro.
Being a genuine winger, Pedro has a successful take on rate of 70%, compared to just 51.72% from Mkhitaryan, who is more of a playmaker. The Armenian has been stronger in the air, winning 26.47% of this aerial duels compared to just 22.22% by Pedro. However, the Chelsea man has been more effective in a defensive frame.
He has won 49.46% of his total duels and made 21 crucial interceptions all season. Though Mkhitaryan made 22 interceptions, he only won 41.12% of his total duels. The Spaniard’s trickery also saw him win 39 fouls throughout the campaign while Mkhitaryan won just 26 fouls all season.
For a title winning season, Pedro, who was also not involved in any European competition, was in terrific form throughout the campaign. But playing with a settled team made it easier for him than Mkhitaryan, who played with at least 10 different players in the attack for Manchester United.
Yet, it is the 28-year old’s first season in England and surely, he will put in a more effective and influential performance next season. As for Pedro, he will look to keep up his form until the end of next season.
