Chelsea Special: Forget Falcao And Get Lewandowski

Share

With Monaco yesterday officially confirming the signing of Altelico Madrid star Falcao, some people in London must be sulking with the news. It has not often happened that a player has chosen to move to a club only for monetary reasons but has ditched Chelsea even after Roman has made his intentions clear to bring him in.

So for many reasons Falcao must be setting an example and now Roman must have a feeling that there with the current scenario of more and more clubs getting rich, money may not be the only way to bring a player. Therefore now the Chelsea hierarchy must be looking to find an alternative for Falcao and need to act fast.

And the alternative for Falcao is quite in front of them. Reportedly Jose Mourinho has already made enquiries about Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski and the manager intends to bring him to Stamford Bridge along with him in the summer.

Lewandowski to Chelsea?

If Chelsea can bring Lewandowski, it would be an apt replacement for Falcao if not better. The 24 year old Polish striker has had a tremendous season with his club in Germany and this has made him one of the hottest properties of Europe at the moment.

This season he has scored 23 goals from 29 appearances for his club, in a league that is marked for its defensive acumen, unlike the Spanish league where Falcao plays. Secondly, unlike Falcao he is not his team’s sole goal scorer, with three other players scoring 10 goals or more.

After that should come the price difference between the two maverick strikers. Falcao would have cost £50m, while Chelsea can have Lewandowski for as less as half of that amount. In the age of Financial Fair Play that would be an important factor for the club.

The age difference between the two players also puts Lewandowski ahead of Falcao with the Dortmund player being three years younger than the Colombian. This leaves scope for Lewandowski to improve even further in the future and will be ideal for him to cope with the Premier League faster.
