Chelsea Opinion: Chelsea should sign Mateo Kovacic permanently

According to reports from English news outlet the Mirror, Chelsea are still thinking about whether or not to extend Mateo Kovacic’s spell at the club. The midfielder had a mixed spell over the last year or so, often just striding by into Maurizio Sarri’s team.

That’s why the move has to either be extended or made permanent despite the fact that he has no future at Real Madrid. That has already been confirmed by Real Madrid, and the Croatian will play no further part in Zinedine Zidane’s plans.

Which means that yet another talented and underappreciated midfield star is unsettled at the club. He joins Dani Ceballos and Marcos Llorente with the latter star having already left for Atletico Madrid.

It’s a very difficult time at Chelsea but this deal should be one that has already be done and dusted. The 25-year-old joined the Los Blancos with a lot of potential but he’s never really hit the mark since.

However, at Chelsea, he’s shown not just the drive but the potential to really hit his mark. He finished the season with more key passes than half of Chelsea’s team, he has more dribbles than all but three stars and more tackles per game than all but four players.

This is despite the fact that Kovacic has only made 21 starts for the club this season in the Premier League. That puts him on the bottom rung of Sarri’s usual suspects, which showcases his ability. Now with Maurizio Sarri gone, it may be the end for Mateo Kovacic but that shouldn’t be the way things move forward at Chelsea.

The Blues have a chance to keep a man that they desperately need in the near future, especially with Ruben Loftus-Cheek injured for the next few months at the very least. Things need to change for the Blues and with their impending transfer ban, it does make sense for the club to extend his loan spell by a year.

That applies especially for the likes of Ross Barkley, Jorginho and even Danny Drinkwater, if he does remain at the club. It’s a one season free hit and that’s something that Chelsea really need to keep in mind before things become even worse.

Conclusion

Chelsea cannot add reinforcements no matter how much the club want to add reinforcements at the club. That’s exactly why a move for Mateo Kovacic makes so much sense. They need to extend his spell if they ever want to have a future as genuine top-four contenders in the Premier League.
