It took Jose Mourinho just two seasons to get Chelsea back to the top of the pile. Mourinho guided Chelsea to a Premier League crown, something they seemed to win rather easily as their closest rivals just could not gather enough steam to chase the Chelsea bus down. Jose had always stated that he should be judged based on his second season and well he has delivered.
The high points
Well obviously winning the league title, especially when compared to other clubs spending millions of pounds in strengthening the team, Jose Mourinho’s side actually had a negative net spend and won the title, credit must be given when it is due.
The club also won the League cup defeating Spurs in the final, another cup in the large trophy cabinet of Jose Mourinho. The team played an attacking brand of football at the start of the season which petered down during the last half of the season as Mourinho reverted to his defensive ways. Nevertheless, two trophies in one season has to be a good thing and Roman would be extremely happy having Mourinho at the helm of his beloved Chelsea.
The low points
For all the good points of the season, there have been a few low ones as well. The biggest being their performance in the UEFA Champions League, after having the advantage of coming home with a scored draw against PSG, Chelsea went to a defensive gameplan which ultimately cost them the chance to qualify for the next round.
The other low point? Losing 4-2 at home to Bradford in the FA Cup, that certainly would have felt below the belt for Chelsea and well nothing could have been worse than that for them this season.
The star players
Undoubtedly, the star of the season for both Chelsea and the Premier League was Eden Hazard. The Belgian has been a revelation at Chelsea since he signed from Lille and has become a better player each year he stays at the club. With an eye for goal and creating goals as well, Hazard is sure to achieve greater things with Chelsea, hopefully, he can hit the next level of performance next season.
Diego Costa was another star turn in the Blue of Chelsea this season, he might have missed out on the golden boot due to some niggling injuries but a great first season in England sets him up for El Diego: Returns, as the sequel for next season.
Cesc Fabregas deserves a special mention here as well, having to join a club which is the rival of one of his former clubs might have been a tough decision to make but in the end it was the right call by Cesc. Not only did he win the Premier League for the first time in his career, he was at the top of his game at the start of the season as he notched up a great partnership with Costa. The second half of the season might have seen his performances dip a little, but that was the only negative part of his game this season, oh and the red card against West Brom.
Plans for next season
Well apart from retaining the Premier League title, the real aim for Jose Mourinho would be to do better in the UEFA Champions League. Getting to the final with his Chelsea team would be an achievement for the Chosen one and if Hazard and company play the same way they had in the first half of this season, who knows what Chelsea will be able to achieve next season.
