Chelsea Player Ratings vs Everton

Captain, Leader and legend would suit to only one man who stole the show at Stamford Bridge. In one of the most breathtaking matches of the season so far, Chelsea hosted Everton and the high-scoring match ended at 3-3 with 2 goals coming in extra time.

Everton took the lead five minutes into the second half when John Terry turned Baines’ cross into his own net. Soon after this, a brilliant Everton passing game saw Kevin Mirallas score a stunner of a goal beating Courtois on his near post.

Yet two goals in two minutes from Diego Costa, who capitalised on a Phil Jagielka mistake, and Cesc Fabregas, with a deflected shot, squared the match before Funes Mori latched on to Gerard Deulofeu’s cross from close range.
Manager Guus Hiddink’s unbeaten record survived after an amazing match that saw his side fall two goals behind soon after halftime, fight back to 2-2 and then seemingly throw away the points with poor defending which saw Everton sub Ramiro Funes Mori score in the 90th minute.

Everton were on their way to celebrate their first victory at Chelsea since November 1994, Terry came up with a controversial winner deep into added time to pull up the stumbling Chelsea and earn a draw.

This is how we rated the Chelsea players after this match:-

1) Thibaut Courtois – 6/10

While Courtois was hardly challenged in the first half, he rose to the occasion with a splendid save denying Everton in the second half. He couldn’t do anything for the next 2 goals that followed as his defence let him down massively. When Funes Mori scored the third for Everton though, Courtois was caught ball watching and at the end, it was a disappointing effort to keep the ball out of the goal line.

2) Branislav Ivanovic- 4/10

While attack is the secondary option for Fullback unless a manager states otherwise, Branislav Ivanovic is one Chelsea player who has struggled to contain his marker throughout the season and same was the case as Ivanovic failed to contain either of Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas and he eventually didn’t mark Funes Mori which led to the third goal for Everton. Amidst the heat from the Chelsea fans, this is one certain place where Guus Hiddink has to involve himself and talk to the player.

3) Kurt Zouma – 7.5/10

For me it was an impressive display from Kurt Zouma. Zouma had a fantastic first half where he managed to keep Lukaku in his pocket and he was also involved in several clearances and blocks denying Everton a sniff at goal.
Although, him letting go of Lennon shouldn’t be held against him, he failed to stop Lukaku in the second half which led to Everton’s goal and he also failed to mark Funes Mori which eventually cost Chelsea probably  2 vital points because we know that if Mori hadn’t scored

4) John Terry – 6/10

On his 700^th appearance for the London club, while John terry has stolen the headlines with his late stunning equaliser, very few can deny that it was a disappointing show as a defender for the captain. He converted Leighton Baines’ cross into his own net and also put up a weak display against Lukaku, getting beaten in pace and Kurt Zouma had to rescue the side by outpacing him.

5) Caesar Azpilicueta- 4.5/10

Although Azpilicueta’s link up play as well as overlapping runs created opportunities for Chelsea to move forward, I found him very unreliable in defence failing to stop Mirallas and also failing to involve himself in the defensive sector to help out his side. This is very unusual for Azpilicueta and we can be confident that the Spanish star shall bounce back immediately and upgrade his performance.

6) Nemanja Matic- 5/10

Making a return to the starting eleven, Matic was very unconvincing in his performance against Everton. Although Guus might have got it tactically wrong, Matic endured losses of concentration in the midfield and he also gave away the ball several times. Matic was not at all dominant in the game unlike himself and was later on subbed out and Oscar came in his place.

7) John Obi Mikel- 5.5/10

Mikel was sloppy like Matic and his aggressive play was used to dominate the proceedings although he luckily escaped without a card. Surprisingly, he failed to apply any sort of pressure on Kevin Mirallas before the Winger got into space and scored a goal.

8) Cesc Fabregas – 8.5/10 (MOTM) – That’s The Cesc We All  Know 

This was an impressive Cesc Fabregas. Although he was quite silent during the first half, this can’t be blamed on his since the entire Chelsea team was sleeping. In the second half, Fabregas came into life. His inch-perfect long ball from the middle provided an assist for Diego Costa and his deflected shot later on led to another goal for Chelsea who were 2-0 down and came back fighting to level 2-2. The Chelsea base shall only hope that this might be the spark for Cesc to start firing.

9) Willian- 6.5/10
For the Brazilian it wasn’t a really good game and nor was is it a bad game. It was a mediocre game for Willian who put up a hardworking effort and came close to scoring the winner in the second half.

10) Pedro- 6/10

Pedro is still settling in the tough English game. Although he made pacey and penetrating runs several times, it was quite a mediocre performance for someone who is rated at a top level. He was trying too hard to impress and he was present around the midfield areas but he must stop giving the ball away ridiculously. It led to conceding of possession several times in the game.

11) Diego Costa- 8/10

Diego Costa put up another impressive display which was gladly appreciated by Chelsea fans who sang “Diego! Diego!” when he left. Costa scored the first Chelsea goal after a long ball from Fabregas went his way and he dodged past Howard to put the ball into the empty net. He was quite an influence in Chelsea’s revival until he was subbed off for a minor injury and was replaced by Loic Remy.
