According to a report from the Guardian, Chelsea are considering the option of extending Olivier Giroud’s contract at the club. The Frenchman has played second fiddle to both Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain but his value to the Blues side is still immeasurable.
Giroud, despite a number of fantastic performances, hasn’t had the trust of Maurizio Sarri to get a guaranteed starting role in the Premier League and with his contract expiring at the end of the season, things looked to be on a downward spiral.
However, the option may not be in Giroud’s hands as an option in his current deal allows Chelsea to extend his contract by another year. The Blues will be making a massive mistake if they fail to exercise that option in the summer.
Chelsea have a massive problem with respect to player recruitment after FIFA handed the West London club with a two-window transfer ban. The Blues will struggle a lot if they lose Giroud in the summer, especially with Gonzalo Higuain’s loan deal coming to an end at the end of the season.
Giroud has been a mainstay in Chelsea’s Europa League campaign and the former Arsenal man has scored 9 goals in 9 games so far – the highest in the competition.
The Frenchman, who arrived at Stamford Bridge for £18m, has had a tremendous impact off the bench in the Premier League too, scoring twice and assisting 4 times in under 800 minutes of football this season.
The World Cup winner’s hold-up play is a massive asset to this Chelsea’s side comprising of willing runs on either wing who can massively benefit from the Frenchman’s ability to retain the ball.
Giroud’s presence in the squad opens up a whole new dimension for Sarri and Chelsea, with their fantastic talent out wide, could feed the Frenchman with their crosses.
Giroud, even as a substitute, can help the Blues massively, especially if Morata returns and fails to contribute in terms of goals. The former Arsenal man can help change games for the Blues when coming on and his ability to play either as a lone striker or with a partner up front will give Sarri a lot of options.
Chelsea are absolutely right to give Olivier Giroud a new contract and the Frenchman, as he has already proven, will be a massive asset for the club.
Giroud would provide much-needed depth to the Blues’ squad and the former Arsenal man is also more than capable of leading the side from the start.

Chelsea and Maurizio Sarri should make it a point to trigger the option in the Frenchman’s contract to keep him at the club beyond the summer.
