Why Chelsea Are Insane In Trying To Sign This £227,000-per-week Former Premier League Player Gyan

Share

Chelsea are in the market for a number of players, but one rumor doing the rounds certainly has our heads scratching. The Blues haven’t had the best of times when it comes to getting quality strikers in with only Diego Costa actually doing something good in front of goal, especially after Guus Hiddink came back to the club.

The Blues are after Asamoah Gyan, yes, the same Sunderland striker who left the club to go to the UAE because he wanted to secure the future of his family. The Ghana striker did have a prolific scoring record for Al Ain in the UAE with 128 goals in 120 games and this led him to another big money move to the Chinese Super League with Shanghai SIPG where he earns a baffling amount of £227, 000-a-week.

The 30-year-old scored 10 goals in 17 games, not a bad return for the striker given that he isn’t the youngest anymore but this certainly would be a mad decision by Antonio Conte and the Chelsea management. Granted, they need someone on the bench who can score goals, but Gyan is not the right man for the job.

The former Sunderland man might have been impressive during his stint with the Black Cats but he cannot play at that same level like he used to. The 30-year-old would actually have to spend a lot of time on the bench also and that is something he might not want to do next season at Chelsea either.

The decision to sign him would also be a backward step for a club that wants to move to the future and not look back at other players who are well past their time in the Premier League. They saw how the deal with Radamel Falcao worked out and this deal could also be a similar one this season.

The other issue would be his wages as his time with Al Ain and Shanghai led him to become one of the highest paid footballers in the world and Chelsea might not want to pay him as much as he was making in the other leagues. Gyan might still have the killer instinct in front of goal but that does not mean he will be a perfect answer to Chelsea’s problems next season.

What Chelsea need is someone who can do the deal coming off the bench and maybe giving a chance to Patrick Bamford next season could be the right way to go about their business. He would not mind staying on the bench either and with more opportunities under Conte as he would look to switch the team around, Bamford is the man next season for the Blues, not some former Premier League star.
