Why Chelsea should make the move for Alessio Romagnoli

According to the Sun, Chelsea are interested in signing AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli in January. New manager Maurizio Sarri is keen to bolster his defensive setup and is an admirer of the Milan centre-back.

The Sun claims that Chelsea are going to face stiff competition from Manchester United, who are also in pursuit of the Italian’s signature in order to solve their defensive woes this season. But a move to Chelsea seems better for the 23-year-old, given that Sarri is Italian and has proven to be a more composed manager, unlike Jose Mourinho.

Romagnoli has impressed since the takeover of Gennaro Gattuso as first-team manager at San Siro. He has been a regular feature under the former Milan defender.

Romagnoli, age 23, has shown immense growth and maturity in his displays over the last year.

He has been so impressive under Gattuso that the manager has handed him the captain’s armband. At 6ft 2in, the Italian may not be the most towering presence but is certainly an intimidating figure to come up against.

The Milan centre-back is calm and composed at the back, especially under pressure, and that’s why he can seamlessly fit into Sarri’s philosophy at Chelsea. Romagnoli is a versatile defender who is generally classified as a centre-back but is also capable of filling in at left-back.

The 23-year-old is very strong in the air as well and is known for his aerial prowess both in the defence and while going forward too. He has made a number of last-ditch clearances to ensure Milan have maintained their nine-game unbeaten run so far.

The Italian is also a crisp passer of the ball, averaging a pass success rate of 91.4% in the Serie A this season. He has also averaged an impressive 93.7% pass success in the UEFA Europa League.

Romagnoli is capable of initiating attacks from the back with his good range of passing and that is another quality which should help him flourish in Sarri’s system. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)

Chelsea should definitely make a move for the Italian in January and aim to beat Manchester United to do it. The Blues are currently on the up under their new manager but need to bolster their squad further to compete on all fronts.

Romagnoli may not be able to play in the Europa League if he makes the move, but the fight for the Premier League still seems appealing.
