Chelsea Blog: Why The Conte And Cavani Partnership Will Take The Premier League By Storm

Share

A surprise entrant into the running for the Chelsea job is Antonio Conte, the former Juventus player and manager certainly was a surprise name for everyone, especially since he never has managed in the Premier League and is currently employed with the Italian national side.

The 46-year-old though has shown that he is capable of doing a stellar job as he has turned Juventus around and he won three consecutive Serie A titles with the Old Lady before taking over the Italian job. Conte though knows that he will have a tough job on his hands if he is to take over from Guus Hiddink at Chelsea.

Antonio Conte

The Dutch manager has not faced defeat in domestic competitions this season and still is capable of getting the result that can take Chelsea into the next round of the UEFA Champions League should they defeat PSG by more than one goal.

Conte though would be looking to get an upgrade here and there, as expected by most new managers when they come into a new club. Chelsea have earmarked quite a few players who could be making the move to Stamford Bridge and one such player is Edinson Cavani.

The 29-year-old striker for PSG has always been linked with a move away from the French capital due to the preference that Zlatan gets at the club and although Zlatan would be moving away from the side come the end of this season, Cavani moving for a tougher challenge is also a reality that can take place.

The Uruguayan has 73 goals in 132 games for PSG and had an ever better record of scoring for Napoli with 104 goals in just 134 games for the Serie A side. Cavani could be the missing link that Chelsea have needed in their attack for a long time.

Diego Costa has shown that he can play well when there is a need to but more often than not he ends up causing problems for the opposition or for the team. Having Cavani play either as the sole striker or as a partnership would be beneficial not only for Chelsea but also for Costa.

Antonio Conte mostly does play with two proper attackers in his side and pairing up Costa and Cavani would lead to one of the most formidable striker pairings in the Premier League. Costa can be the brawn while Cavani can be the player who makes great runs and scores goals when he wants.

Of course Chelsea would have to pay a bomb to PSG if they are to sign the Uruguayan. Cavani also would want a bumper contract if he does move to London and there is also the fear that he could turn out to be another Andriy Shevchenko.

Conte though would make sure that does not happen for the team. He has handled some of the biggest names in the Italian game and was able to turn Juventus around and end the domination of Inter Milan in Serie A. Who says he cannot do it in England as well?
