Chelsea allowing this 23-year-old attacker to leave on loan should be an absolute no-brainer and here’s why

Why Chelsea loaning out Kenedy to Sassuolo should be ideal for all parties

According to The Sun, Chelsea have entered into negotiations with Serie A outfit Sassuolo over a potential loan move for out-of-favour Brazilian winger Kenedy.

The 23-year-old wide player, who made his move to Chelsea from Brazilian club Fluminense back in 2015, has failed to make his mark in the first-team at Stamford Bridge, featuring on only 15 occasions in the Premier League.

The former Brazilian youth international was a peripheral figure under former Chelsea managers Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte and things have hardly changed for him since Frank Lampard took over from Maurizio Sarri at the helm of affairs earlier in the summer.

Kenedy made only a solitary appearance for Watford on his loan spell in 2016-17 before joining Newcastle United on loan for the second half of the 2017-18 season.

After impressing with his energetic displays towards the end of the campaign, his loan spell at Tyneside was extended by another twelve months, with an option to buy included in the agreement.

However, Newcastle snubbed the chance to make his stay permanent following the Brazilian’s lacklustre displays last season, with the Magpies baulking at Chelsea’s ridiculous £30million valuation of the player. (h/t Sun)

Having returned to Stamford Bridge earlier in the summer for assessment by Frank Lampard, Kenedy enjoyed quite a lot of involvement in the club’s pre-season friendlies but he apparently failed to convince the new manager that he is up to the challenge.

Now, as the story goes, Kenedy, who is in the last year of his contract at Stamford Bridge, is closing in on yet another loan spell.

The move to Sassuolo, if it materializes, would mean a third successive loan spell away from his parent club for the 23-year-old and he apparently doesn’t have a future in West London.

It is hardly a surprise that Chelsea have struggled to find suitors for Kenedy this summer following a rather inconsistent loan spell on Tyneside that yielded only three goals in 41 appearances across all competitions.

Interestingly enough, though, Sassuolo are prepared to offer both Chelsea and Kenedy an escape route, with the Italians currently on the hunt for a left-sided player before the deadline following an injury to their star man Rogerio. (h/t Sun)

To put things into perspective, Kenedy, who is capable of playing on either flank, certainly fits the bill at Sassuolo and Chelsea should be happy to flog him out on loan. However, they would need to tie him down to a new contract before completing any loan deal, given that his current deal is set to expire next summer.

Realistically, Chelsea would recoup next to nothing if they decide to sell him permanently to another club this summer, with Kenedy’s contract situation putting the Blues in a weak negotiating position.

Hence, the ideal stance for Chelsea would be to protect their investment by tying the 23-year-old down to a new deal and then loaning him out, which would then enable the Blues to get a better fee in the future should they opt to sell him.

All in all, Kenedy, who has largely underwhelmed over the course of his stay in English football, finds himself surplus to requirements at the club and the fans are likely to welcome the news of his departure with open arms.
