Chelsea 5-1 Manchester City: 3 Things We Learned As City Capitulate At Stamford Bridge

Share

It was a five-star showing by Chelsea against Manchester City, the Blues made it back-to-back games at Stamford Bridge where they have hit their opponents for five goals in their last two games. Manchester City though didn’t seem to take the game too seriously as injuries and a few surprise debutants played a part in their team selection.Manchester City, the Blues made it back-to-back games at Stamford Bridge where they have hit their opponents for five goals in their last two games. Manchester City though didn’t seem to take the game too seriously as injuries and a few surprise debutants played a part in their team selection.

Whatever Manuel Pellegrini had in mind, it didn’t really work out all that well as Chelsea were brutal against a young team but City were level at 1-1 during the end of the first half. Chelsea hit second gear in the second half and trampled past City with goals from Willian, Cahill, Hazard and Traore.

Questions will be asked about Pellegrini’s team selection and with an important clash in the Champions League coming up; it might be tough for the Chilean to get his team back on the right road after losses to Tottenham and Leicester in the Premier League.

Chelsea though seem to be going from strength to strength under Hiddink and could well repeat the feat under him of winning the FA Cup. Here are three things we learned from the game.

  1. Chelsea are gunning for glory
Guus Hiddink

Chelsea do not look like a side short of confidence at the moment, they were absolutely brilliant against an inexperienced Manchester City team and could have scored more goals. Every player out there was brilliant especially in the second half and the FA Cup could be a realistic target for Hiddink.

The Dutch manager won the trophy when he was the last manager of the club and with the team playing the way it is, he could be lifting the trophy once again. It would be a good moment for a club that has struggled so much this season and could set things for next season as well.

2. City’s slide is a concern for all

Losses against Tottenham and Leicester seem to have taken the fizz out of a title challenge and this loss certainly does not bode well for Manchester City. They seem to have lost a lot of confidence over the games and there is serious concern about them not making it into the top four.

City are just six points ahead of another struggling club Manchester United and it will be interesting to see which club just about makes it into the top four. Either club missing out would be a major loss to them but with both teams playing poorly, this won’t be a race which everyone would enjoy.

3. Guardiola will have to make changes

Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola’s announcement as the next City manager has had a detrimental effect on the team and it seems the Spaniard will have a huge task on his hands. City do have a good team but the lack of belief all of a sudden is a concern for everyone involved.

Guardiola would be given a sizeable war chest to change things at the club and he will have to replace players such as Caballero, Toure and a couple of defenders at least. Guardiola has a lot of work to do and it should start from now as he scouts players for City.
