According to a report in Football Scotland, Scottish champions Celtic’s interest in Rosenborg left-back Birger Meling has accelerated in the past few days as they seek to replace Kieran Tierney before the transfer deadline day.
Meling has played for Rosenborg against the Hoops in European qualifier ties four times, scoring once in a 3-1 loss in July 2018. With new signing Boli Bolingoli yet to find his feet, Neil Lennon is seriously looking to add to his left-back options. (h/t Football Scotland)
MLS side Los Angeles FC were also interested in the Norwegian, but their offer was rejected. However, Rosenborg boss Eirik Horneland has admitted that the player could leave at some point. (h/t Football Scotland)
We all know Celtic have the money, more so after selling Tierney for £25m. With left-back an issue unresolved, here’s why they should sign Meling to solve that before it gets too late:
Birger Meling is a quality player who has been consistently good in the past 18-24 months. Predominantly a left-back, the 24-year-old can operate as a left-winger or in central midfield, if required by the team.
During the course of 18/19 season, the Norwegian international played 30 games for Rosenborg in all competitions, scoring two goals and assisting a further three while playing in all of the positions mentioned above.
In terms of his attributes, Meling has good pace to make runs up and down the field from wide areas. He is a fantastic crosser of the ball, is defensively astute in one-v-one situations and physically strong on/off the ball.
So, it won’t be an understatement to say that if Celtic manage to sign him before the transfer deadline, it would be a massive coup. The player is talented and young enough to further grow in the coming years.
Thus, we can conclude by saying that the Hoops shouldn’t hesitate in forking out the cash to sign Birger Meling during this transfer window. Not only he would be a good addition to the squad, but potentially a long-term solution to the left-back issue.
