According to a report in Herald Scotland, Scottish giants Celtic could make a shock swoop for Azerbaijan defender Bahlul Mustafazade in the summer window.
The Gabala centre-back is out of contract at the end of this season and is set to leave the club for free. The Hoops have invited him for a summer-trial, with an eye for making a move, once the window opens (h/t Herald Scotland).
The Azerbaijan U21 international has been attracting interest, following his good performances at Gabala. He is a youth product of the club, who started playing for the senior team at the beginning of this season.
Here’s why Celtic would be right in signing him over the summer window:
Celtic have had a great domestic season and are on course to win the treble. They are in the final of the Scottish Cup and a probable two wins away from claiming the league title.
However, looking ahead to next season, they need to make changes to further improve as a team, especially in the European circuit. The Hoops have struggled to make an impact in the Champions League and Europa League.
While their attacking department requires some tweaks, the defensive setup needs some surgery. The departure of Dedryck Boyata is imminent, hence, a new quality centre-back should be on the list.
For that reason, Bahlul Mustafazade could be a great addition to this squad. The Azerbaijan U21 international is a fantastic centre-back, who can also play in defensive midfield if required.
He is one of those defenders, who is comfortable in clearing out danger, rather than playing out from the back in dangerous situations. His physicality will help him deal with centre-forwards in aerial duels and allow him to be a threat from set-pieces in the opposition box.
Therefore, we can say that Celtic are doing the right thing by inviting him on trial before making a move. The 22-year-old is certain to impress them with his game and eventually join the Hoops ahead of next season.
