Celtic FC opinion: Hoops should sign Timothy Weah permanently

Despite losing Brendan Rodgers in January, Celtic are still in excellent shape ahead of the final phase of the Scottish Premiership. They have a thirteen-point lead over Rangers, which is unassailable.

They are on course for a domestic treble as they remain in all available competitions barring the Europa League. Knocked out by Valencia in the round of 32, Celtic have welcomed it by using it to spur on their league campaign.

That combined with key additions over the winter transfer window including Timothy Weah has played a big part in their recent success. The goal-hungry PSG forward joined the Hoops on loan and is a move that the club should look to make permanent.

Son of Ballon d’Or winner, legendary footballer and Liberia president George Weah, the young Timothy has a lot of expectations to live up to. He joined PSG as a youngster, moving his way up their ranks at a stunning rate and made the cut for the first-team two years after he signed for them.

However, given the unbelievable talent that PSG have at their disposal, Weah found game time hard to come by. This was followed by a move to Celtic (BBC), where the young forward has been integrated into the team slowly by caretaker manager Neil Lennon.

The move seems to have paid off, with the 19-year-old scoring three goals, including one in his third start for the club. This was followed by a hint that he might opt to extend his loan deal (in an interview with Football Scotland).

The young forward has shown what he can do when given regular game time. While Weah is a centre-forward, he is talented enough to play anywhere across the front-line, putting his breathtaking speed to great use.

That combined with his dribbling and intelligent style of play makes him very unpredictable. It’s what Celtic need at the moment and while they do have Odsonne Edouard at their disposal, few others have managed to prove themselves.

Both Leigh Griffiths and Vakoun Issouf Bayo have struggled. They’ve managed to score just 2 goals between themselves, effectively putting a lot of pressure on Edouard. The addition of Weah has taken away some of the pressure.

Conclusion

Given the talent at PSG, Timothy Weah will find it very hard to break into the first-team in the near future, especially given the Champions League hopes that the Ligue 1 side are clinging on to.

That’s something Celtic need to use to their advantage and make a permanent move for the young forward.
