Celtic FC Opinion: Why the Hoops should revive their interest in Castagne?

Celtic are currently in the middle of the transfer window and haven’t fared well when compared to their arch-rivals Rangers.

By and large, one of Neil Lennon’s biggest conundrums will be to sign a proper right-back. Mikael Lustig, who parted ways with the Hoops earlier this summer, will be hard to replace.

The Swedish full-back proved to be a cog in Celtic’s backline over the course and he never looked out of sorts even in his injury-ridden 2018/19 campaign.

Finding Lustig’s successor is no mean feat but the Hoops really can strike gold if they revive interest in Timothy Castagne of Atalanta.

Castagne’s impressive 2018/19 campaign

Elsewhere in Italy, Castagne was a key figure in Atalanta’s fairytale run, which eventually saw them getting qualified for next season’s Champions League.

The 23-year-old played 37 games and racked up 5 goals and 5 assists and was included in the Serie A’s Team of the Year.

Despite being labelled as a right-back, the Belgian acted as a utility player, playing on several positions on either side of the flank.

Furthermore, his impressive season in the Serie A led to his call-up for the Euro qualifiers, where he also bagged a goal and an assist.

Castagne cut an impressive figure in terms of the defensive and attacking index as he held a pass success percentage of 83, with an average of 2.2 tackles and 1.6 clearances per game. Notably, he was awarded the Man of the Match on two occasions.

Castagne is the right man for Celtic

Meanwhile at Celtic Park last season, the Hoops were left in dismay after Jeremy Toljan’s unimpressive loan spell. The German full-back was brought from Dortmund to ease the pressure off Lustig but he largely failed to meet his expectations.

With Toljan back to the Bundesliga, Castagne would be a perfect fit for the Scottish giants.
