Celtic re-signing this 32-year-old Sunderland star would be a game-changer by Rodgers

Why Celtic should go all out to re-sign Aiden McGeady in January

Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady has told the Record that he would jump at the chance to join Celtic again.

The 32-year-old left Celtic in 2010 to join Spartak Moscow after winning seven major trophies in a six-year stint at the Parkhead. Now at Sunderland, the Republic of Ireland international has 18 months left to run on his contract on Wearside.

Now that Aiden McGeady has opened up on his dream to finish his career at Parkhead, should Celtic make a move for him in January? They probably should.

Celtic should take a dip in the transfer market in January after losing Daniel Arzani for the entire season. The young Australian tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his debut game, which was the 5-0 demolition at Dundee a couple of weeks ago.

The Hoops failed to make significant additions in the summer which resulted in a slow start for them this season. However, Brendan Rodgers’ side have recovered from the sluggish start and are now firing on all cylinders in the Scottish Premiership.

Yet, Celtic are short in some areas to really hold onto the league title and also challenge in the Europa League. Keeping that in mind, Rodgers should splash the cash on an attacker who would join the squad and make a real difference.

Aiden McGeady would be perfect for Celtic as he has played for the club before and knows the Scottish league very well. With close to 150 Scottish Premiership appearances under his belt from his time with the Hoops, that kind of experience could prove crucial for Rodgers and co. The Republic of Ireland international is skilful, creative, industrious and can score goals as well.

McGeady is 32 now and is past his prime, but he is a player with solid European experience and will offer freshness to Celtic’s attacking ranks. His pace and agility may have dried up but there’s no denying his desire to compete for every second ball and his ability to create something out of nothing.

The former Spartak Moscow man, who has three goals for Sunderland in League One, still has plenty to offer even though he is 32. Hence, Celtic must not miss a chance to get McGeady back to Parkhead in January.

All in all, McGeady could be a massive signing for the Hoops.
