Why Celtic have done the right thing by signing Moritz Bauer

According to a report in Scottish Sun, Scottish champions have signed right-back Moritz Bauer on a season-long loan deal from Stoke City, with an option to buy at the end of the term.

He is a Swiss-born Austrian international, who has six international appearances. He started his first-team career back in Grasshoppers of Switzerland, before joining Rubin Kazan in 2016.

After spending two years there, the defender went to Stoke City during the January window of 2018. However, he wasn’t getting regular game time the Bet365 Stadium.

From his point of view, it is a good move to opt to play for Celtic initially on loan deal, with an option to become a permanent player there.

Here’s why this is a good deal for the Hoops as well:

Right-back depth needed solving

After the departure of Mikael Lustig, Kristoffer Ajer has been doing a good job at right-back. However, Celtic had to replace the former before the summer transfer window ended.

After all, Ajer is predominantly a centre-back and is just covering up at right-back. With the Hoops needing options in central defence too, the 21-year-old would be best served to play there.

For those reasons, Celtic are right to sign specialist right-back Moritz Bauer. The Austria international is a quality player, who deserved to play more games at Stoke.

In terms of his attributes, the 27-year-old has good pace to burn to make runs up and down the field. He is a good crosser of the ball, can defend well in wide areas and is physically strong on/off the ball.

Conclusion

Thus, we can conclude by saying that Neil Lennon’s men have got a gem of a right-back to solve their lack of depth in that position. Bauer’s addition makes them strong at the back and dynamic going forward in possession.

He would also help in the team’s Europa League journey, having played for clubs in Switzerland and Russia before.
