The 19-year-old has been a part of the Southampton academy since 2016. He has represented Saints at the U18 and U23 levels and was touted to be one of the stars in the future.
Afolabi has scored 16 goals and assisted eight of them in 73 appearances in all competitions in youth level games for the Saints. He is a versatile forward player who could be a game-changing addition to the Celtic squad.
Below, we analyse his game in depth and conclude why the Hoops have done the right thing by signing him:
Jonathan Afolabi is a versatile player who can play in every position across the front line. Predominantly a centre-forward, the 19-year-old is capable of operating as a winger on either side of the field.
In terms of his attributes, the Republic of Ireland U19 international has got pace to burn that helps to stretch the opposition back line at every given opportunity.
He is a good dribbler of the ball and can accelerate for a short distance to burst past defenders. A good finisher in and around the opposition box, he is physically strong to contest duels against centre-backs and is a solid presser off the ball from the front.
At such a young age, Afolabi has loads of good attributes under his belt already. He is just going to improve in the coming years, which is not good news for defenders.
Thus, we can conclude by saying that Celtic have absolutely done the right thing by signing him on a three-year deal. He could be a game-changing signing help the Hoops be an all-around threat going forward.
