Why Celtic should sign Oliver Burke from West Bromwich Albion

According to a report in Daily Record, Scottish champions Celtic are weighing up a move for West Brom winger Oliver Burke. The 21-year-old is set to be loaned out by the Baggies for the second half of this season after making just three appearances this campaign.

Albion paid around £15m to get the player from RB Leipzig, however, Darren Moore is willing to let go of him and the Hoops are monitoring his situation. As per the report, Burke is aware of the interest coming in from Brendan Rodgers’ men. Millwall are also interested in acquiring his services.

Here’s why Celtic should do everything and get the 21-year-old over to the Parkhead this month:

Burke could be a difference-maker in the title race

After their loss to Rangers in the Old Firm Derby, Celtic are now top of the Scottish league only on goal difference, with the Gers chasing them with all their might. The Hoops sold striker Moussa Dembele late in the summer window and didn’t replace him.

While they should be aiming to buy a striker or two this month, getting a game-changing winger would be a bonus. This is where signing Burke, even on a short-term deal, would make sense. The youngster is a prodigious talent who is not getting regular playing time at the Hawthorns. Hence, for the development of Scot, the need is to play more games, be it from the start or from the bench.

Currently, Celtic have James Forrest, Scott Sinclair and Callum McGregor as the options to play in the wide attacking areas. They could do with getting another player of grave propensity, someone who could be a difference-maker in pressure situations.

Among the attributes the 21-year-old possess, rapid pace with or without the ball is something that terrorises defences. He can dribble past people in the wide areas to create space for a cross or a shot after cutting inside.

The Hoops know that they are in a title race with Rangers right behind them, and with Europa League football to resume in February, where they face Valencia in the last-32 stage, the squad depth of equal quality is a necessity. If Rodgers’ men are to challenge for the treble or the double, getting Burke would be ideal.
