The Daily Mail has revealed that Cardiff City are targeting Rotherham United midfielder Will Vaulks as they look towards reinforcing their side. At the moment, the Bluebirds are in 16th position in the Premier League table and are one point away from the relegation zone.
At the moment, Vaulks has eighteen months left on his deal and could look to move on at the end of this current season, according to the Daily Mail. This has put Cardiff City, Sheffield United and even a Serie A club on alert, and that’s no surprise given Will Vaulks’ performances.
The English midfielder has seen his value shoot up in recent months after a string of commanding performances in the midfield for the struggling Championship side, Rotherham United.
Moreover, the 25-year-old’s ability to play a variety of roles does make him a worthy prospect for any bottom side. For Cardiff City, however, it will be his ability to play as a defensive midfielder that will attract them, with their current crop of midfielders struggling.
The likes of Joe Ralls, Victor Camarasa, Leandro Bacuna, Stuart O’Keefe, Loic Damour and a few others have all struggled to make an impact. This has been a big reason why the Bluebirds are in the relegation battle, with them failing to create too many chances for their strikers to score.
While their strikers too have struggled to find the net, the fact that the service behind them has been poor hasn’t helped their cause. While Will Vaulks won’t score too many goals, he adds a bit of solidity and that does encourage the attacking players to venture forward.
Having someone like Vaulks will allow Neil Warnock to play a more offensive style of football if needed, as he would have a reliable destroyer standing right in front of his back-line.
However, if Cardiff do get relegated back to the Championship, things could get complicated and that might hurt any move. Will Vaulks might not mind playing in the Championship, given the 25-year old has made 68 appearances in England’s second tier, however, given his age and the fact that Vaulks might want to challenge himself at a higher level, Cardiff might find it difficult to sign him if they get relegated.
