Man Utd, Chelsea Fans and EPL Fans: Here is Your Math for Champions League Qualification

The Champions League still has one more matchday to go, but three Premier League teams are unsure about their participation in the next round. Only Manchester City are guaranteed a spot in the next round – who would have thought that would be possible – and the other teams are hoping that a great performance in the next round will be enough to take them through.

Progress into the next round not only brings them prize money but also helps the team’s UEFA coefficients, something to help them avoid some of the bigger teams by improving their UEFA rankings. We look ahead to a tense and nail-biting final game of each group for the English clubs and check out what they need to do to progress.

Group B

Manchester United missed the chance of making it out of the group as they were held to a 0-0 draw against PSV at home. The English club wasn’t all that great in attack and certainly the fans let fly with a torrent of criticism on social media. United though have their fate in their own hands as a win against Wolfsburg in Germany would be enough for them to qualify.

Wolfsburg are topping the table, one point ahead of United and two ahead of third-placed PSV. The Germans know that a draw against United would be enough to see them through. PSV know that they have to win against CSKA and that would be enough for them to go through, the Dutch team are at home on the final day against CSKA.

Only two out of Wolfsburg, Manchester United and PSV can make it through from the group, though.

Group D

Sergio Aguero

The easiest group to deal with, Manchester City might have lost to Juventus, but they were already through and the victory for the Serie A champions was enough to see them through. The next set of games are between City and Monchengladbach while Sevilla host Juventus. The battle would be to top the group.

City are two points behind leaders Juventus, Sevilla are two points behind Monchengladbach who sit in the Europa League spot. A win for Monchengladbach would be enough to see them through to the Europa League while a win for Sevilla against Juventus would be enough to see them through to the Europa league as long as Monchengladbach don’t win at City.

Group F

Alexis Sanchez

Can Arsenal produce yet another comeback for an English team? We have seen Manchester City somehow qualify from precarious positions in the Champions League in earlier seasons, but Arsenal doing it would be something extraordinary especially after having lost their first two games against Olympiakos and Dinamo Zagreb.

The Gunners are three points behind second-placed Olympiakos and they know a win against the Greek club should see them through as long as they do not win 2-1 or 1-0, then the story of away goals comes from the other game which Arsenal lost 3-2 at home. Olympiakos need a draw and they will qualify. The other game sees Bayern Munich, who are already through, travelling to Zagreb but with Zagreb eliminated from Europe; this match is a dead rubber.

Group G

Jose Mourinho has a decison to make

Chelsea’s win over Maccabi Tel Aviv did put them in prime position to qualify. Though the English Champions are second in the group behind Porto but level on points, they host the Portuguese club in the final match day and they know a draw would be enough to see them through but a win for Porto would put the Portuguese team through and that would allow Dynamo Kiev a chance of making it through.

The Ukrainian team would have to beat Maccabi Tel Aviv and if the game at Stamford Bridge ends as a draw, it will be Kiev and Chelsea making it through with Porto ending in the Europa League.
