Can Arsenal Still Win The Premier League?

Share

A day filled with drama saw two of the Premier League title hopefuls draw. West Ham and Leicester played out a controversial draw with many questionable calls but Arsenal were poor at home as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace.

The booes were ringing out loud at the Emirates as the fans showed their displeasure and well, Arsenal did lose out a chance on closing the gap to Leicester, who would be missing Jamie Vardy in the next game due to a red card he picked up.

Arsenal have now lost 16 points from winning positions and that just shows how soft the Gunners have been. They dominated possession but it always felt like Palace were the ones who were going to win it after Bolasie scored for the Eagles.

The draw leaves Arsenal on 60 points, 13 points behind Leicester and 5 behind Tottenham. Leicester have four games in hand and Arsenal have five. There have been some great chases in the history of the Premier League but can Arsenal still do it?

5 games for glory

The first thing we need to do is to list out the fixtures for Leicester and Arsenal. Leicester plays Swansea, Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea for the remainder of the season. Arsenal face West Brom, Sunderland, Norwich, Manchester City and Aston Villa in their five games.

Tottenham face Stoke City, West Brom, Chelsea, Southampton and Newcastle. Arsenal have a couple of tough fixtures against Manchester City and Sunderland away. While beating City would not be easy, with the Champions League playing on the mind of Manuel Pellegrini’s men, getting the three points against the Manchester side could well be doable.

From the last five games for Arsenal, it is possible to win all and get the 15 points, anything less than that would ensure that Leicester and Tottenham get away from the Gunners. Tottenham are in the same boat as Arsenal, though they are only eight points behind Leicester.

Spurs should be able to defeat Stoke City away from home but anything less than that and the initiative falls into the hands of Leicester. The game at the Britannia on Monday would be extremely important for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

If they do get the win, they should beat West Brom next but the important game is against Chelsea on 2 May. Three points there and Spurs would be rampaging on and they could get all three points against Southampton and Newcastle as well to really put Leicester under pressure.

The leaders, Leicester have some really tough games in Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea. United and Chelsea are away from home and getting the win would not be easy against them. Leicester will also be missing Jamie Vardy in the next game due to a suspension and Swansea could still get a point against the leaders. It all would rest on the game against Everton, who have been poor this season.

Leicester have an eight-point lead over their closest rivals but Arsenal actually could still come up trumps if they have a bit of luck on their side. That, unfortunately, will not happen, barring an intervention from some heavenly spirit. The Gunners have blown their chance of winning the league and Tottenham too might find it really hard.

Here is the prediction for the final league table, Leicester should just about pip Spurs for the title.

Teams Points
Leicester 79
Tottenham 76
Arsenal 70
