Bye bye Potter – 3 top-class managerial appointments that Swansea should consider including former Fulham boss

Swansea City opinion: Three replacements for Graham Potter

It’s finally over. Between Celtic and Brighton, few knew who Graham Potter was going to choose as his next decision with Swansea City doing what they could to keep their manager.

The Swans faced a battle to keep their manager at the club and decided to offer him a new deal.

But that clearly failed and Potter signed for Brighton. The 44-year-old replaces Chris Hughton at the club, with the former Seagulls boss sacked a few days after the Premier League season ended.

While that on its own was a rather shocking move, it’s not surprising given that the club finished 17th in the Premier League. Their sudden downfall was down to various factors and is something that the Potters will have to change.

But for Swansea City, it leaves them manager-less and that being said, here are three options for the Swans to consider.

Chris Hughton

The former Brighton manager would arguably be the perfect choice for the mid-table Championship side and having being sacked by Brighton, it would be some move. A promotion specialist, Hughton has done it not once but twice, first with Newcastle United and then with Brighton.

But it’s the second spell that gained him his reputation. Hughton took them from a club that was 21st in the Championship to automatic promotion.

With their rather modest budget, he helped them stay right there, which is what Swansea City need. They have a young squad and while that is good news for any new manager, it’s not a squad capable of fighting for promotion.

Things need to change and maybe the man who has done it twice before would be a great option to have at the helm.

Slavisa Jokanovic

Ignore Jokanovic’s spell at Fulham in the Premier League and instead focus on what he did for the Cottagers the season before. He lead them back into the Premier League via the promotion playoffs, where the club beat Aston Villa in the finals.

It came via a comeback win in the second-leg against Derby County. Along the way, Jokanovic taught his Fulham side to not only play attacking football but counter-attacking football.

They did it so well, that it didn’t help them win the league. But instead, it helped them survive and change from a mid-table side to a promotion challenging side.

That more than anything is what Swansea City should be looking at repeating and Jokanovic’s history with youngsters will only help.

Carlos Carvalhal

While he may have thrown his hat in the ring for the Celtic job, for Swansea City the best option would be bringing back their former manager. The 53-year-old didn’t have the worst time at the club and he was brought in to stop them from getting relegated and came very close to doing the same.

But that was thanks to options way beyond his control, with the club failing to replace Gylfi Sigurdsson or even their top scorer from the previous season in Fernando Llorente. Add Jack Cork and Stephan Kingsley to the list and it was all doom and gloom for the club.

Instead, they signed Andre Ayew, Sam Clucas and Renato Sanches. Nobody worked and now with a young and hungry squad, maybe Carvalhal can work his magic as he has done for Sheffield Wednesday and even Beskitas.

Siddhant Lazar

Tom Landry once said "Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable." Football is and always will be the beautiful game. What every child understands, yet every adult struggles to, is that it is a game that defines the nature of the universe. But that's just me.
