Two long-term replacements for Craig Gordon who Celtic can sign

Scotland international Craig Gordon has been a stalwart in goal for Celtic ever since he joined the club from Sunderland back in 2014.

Gordon, 35, has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the Hoops, helping them to four successive Scottish Premiership titles and also back-to-back domestic trebles.

However, the shot-stopper is turning 36 in December and it remains to be seen how much more top-level football Gordon has in him. Gordon could have a couple of more years in him but if Brendan Rodgers intends to mount a serious challenge on the European stage in the coming years, he might have to seek a long-term replacement for the Scotsman.

That being said, here are three potential goalkeeping targets that Rodgers could consider as a replacement for Gordon.

Simon Mignolet (Liverpool)

Simon Mignolet is the second-choice goalkeeper behind summer signing Alisson Becker at Liverpool. The Belgian lost his place last season to Loris Karius, who was allowed to leave the club for Besiktas on a two-year loan deal in the summer following the arrival of Alisson.

Simon Mignolet

Rodgers was Liverpool’s manager when the Reds signed Mignolet from Sunderland in June 2013 and for the most part, he kept his faith in the Belgian shot-stopper.

Currently out of favour under Jurgen Klopp, Celtic should look to strike a deal for Mignolet. At 30, Mignolet is still in his goalkeeping prime and has a fair number of years ahead of him.

Paulo Gazzaniga (Tottenham Hotspur)

Paulo Gazzaniga has largely been a forgotten man at Tottenham Hotspur following his arrival from the Southampton back in the summer of 2017. The Argentine is the third-choice goalkeeper behind Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm at White Hart Lane.

Gazzaniga’s development has stalled following his switch from Southampton and he won’t be able to reach his potential if he doesn’t start playing regularly.

Paulo Gazzaniga

Considering Gazzaniga’s situation at Tottenham, Celtic must make a move for him in January. With a growing reputation, Gazzaniga certainly has the pedigree to produce the goods on a regular basis in front of 60,000 people at Celtic Park.

With Gordon very much coming to the end of his career, Celtic should make an ambitious move for Gazzaniga in a bid to find the ideal long-term replacement for the Scotland international.
