Brighton 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur: Pochettino’s Men Drop Points Yet Again

Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday evening.

After a 0-0 cagey first half, Spurs took the lead three minutes after the interval with Harry Kane’s powerful shot from inside the box striking Bruno before finding the back of the net.

However, the hosts reacted instantly from the kick-off. Serge Aurier brought down Jose Izquierdo in the box and the referee had no problem whatsoever in pointing to the spot. Pascal Gross stepped up and converted the spot-kick to hand Brighton a precious point at home.

Tottenham player ratings

Hugo Lloris – 6/10

Lloris made a fine first-half save from Knockaert’s deflected effort. He got a hand on Gross’ penalty kick but could not keep it out.

Serge Aurier – 5/10

He conceded a cheap penalty right after Spurs had scored at the other end. Ventured forward on a number of occssions but lacked the final delivery.

Toby Alderweireld – 7/10

It was Alderweireld’s first Premier League appearance since October last year. He looked composed and solid throughout the game. An assured performance from the Belgian.

Jan Vertonghen – 7/10

Typical Vertonghen performance – strong, physical, composed and read the game very well. Coped very well with Glenn Murray and got forward on a few occasions as Spurs searched for a winner.

Ben Davies – 6/10

Davies rarely got forward but was defensively solid throughout the game.

Victor Wanyama – 8/10

Wanyama was immense in an otherwise subdued night for Spurs. The Kenyan made some crunching tackles, intercepted a number of times, showed plenty of energy and provided bite in the midfield.

Moussa Sissoko – 4/10

Sissoko started alongside Wanyama in the middle of the park. The Frenchman was ineffective and lost possession a number of times. Never looked for a creative pass and was replaced by Dembele.

Christian Eriksen – 5/10

It was a rare off-day for the Dane, who tried a lot to impact the game but failed. Neither did his passing look crisp nor did his link-up play threaten Brighton. Took a few extra touches every time he got on the ball which resulted in slowing down the pace of the game. Clearly, it was not Eriksen’s night!

Lucas Moura – 5/10

Started his first Premier League game and showed plenty of energy from the blow of the whistle. Tested goalkeeper Matt Ryan with a stinging shot in the first half and worked hard. He ran out of steam after the interval and was replaced by Lamela.

Heung-min Son – 5/10

Son tested Ryan early on and then the keeper denied him at the stroke of half-time with a spectacular save on the left. He skillfully set up Kane for the opening goal but struggled other than that.

Harry Kane – 5/10

Kane never looked sharp in front of goal and hardly had an impact in the first half. However, he grabbed the goal after the break and after running out of steam, he was replaced by Llorente in the 85th minute.

Substitutes

Erik Lamela – 5/10

Came on for Lucas and immediately brought urgency to Spurs’ game. He burst through the middle nicely but shot straight at Ryan late in the game.

Mousa Dembele – 5/10

Dembele added more bite in the midfield and helped Spurs launch a few late attacks on Brighton.

Fernando Llorente – N/A

Came on for the final few minutes.
