Southampton produced a limp performance against a conservative Burnley side at the St.Mary’s Stadium, as both teams began their Premier League campaign with the season’s first goalless draw. The away side were the better side in a low-key game with Alex McCarthy making several good saves to deny them.
Saints did look more threatening as the game wore on, but it wasn’t enough to go past Joe Hart. However, Burnley were secured enough to not throw away a point. All in all, a point shared, which is perhaps the right result after 90 minutes.
Made some good saves to keep the score level after Southampton raised their game in the second half. It will increase the Englishman’s confidence.
Was steady in defending but could have offered more in the attack by making forward runs and supplying crosses into the box.
The Englishman was a comfortable presence at the back and made some good tackles throughout the game.
Almost scored an own goal, which was scrambled off the line by Ashley Westwood. Apart from that, he was commanding in his own box. Truth be told, Charlie Austin wasn’t even troubling him much.
Ward was good in defending spaces and tracking runs, however, he could have done more to add to the attacking threat for Burnley.
A steady presence in the midfield for the Clarets, keeping the play ticking and providing the shield for the defence.
Was a lively presence in the central areas, saved his team when Mee almost scored an own goal by clearing the ball off the line. A potential point-gainer on the day.
Lennon wasn’t very effective in going forward, should have done better in instances when he recieved possession. He was good in tracking runs at times.
Missed a glorious opportunity early in the second half and was sub-par for most of the game. The main reason why Burnley were steady without threatening.
Hendrick was good in linking the play between the midfield and the attack, unfortunately, there weren’t many instances of him doing that.
The Kiwi striker had an off-day. He ran hard to run the channels and create space for others but nothing worked for him.
Came on to replace a dismal Wood but didn’t do much.
Had a pop from distance to break the deadline, McCarthy didn’t have to twitch much to save that.
