Brighton opinion: Should the Seagulls make a move for Matt Clarke?

After a rather dismal season, Brighton sacked former manager Chris Hughton and instead appointed Graham Potter as a replacement.

The former Swans boss had done relatively well with Swansea City and Ostersunds. It’s his spell with the Swedish side that brought the attention of the world to his doorstep after beating Arsenal.

It earned Potter a move to Swansea City and while he didn’t manage to make the playoff spots, the Swans still did relatively well. Not only that, they finished the season playing an attractive brand of football.

It’s what the Seagulls are looking for and with time, Potter will help change the course of Brighton’s future. But for him to do that, he first needs to add reinforcements to the squad that he will be inheriting from Chris Hughton.

The former Seagulls boss did well with the players he had, but the biggest problem was a struggling front line.

Glenn Murray is itching towards retirement and few others have managed to make the same impact. Jurgen Locadia and Florian Andone have done next to nothing for the club, combining to score just five goals.

Centre-back Shane Duffy managed as much, which showcases just why the Seagulls need new additions in the summer. However, one area that just needs updating is their back-line, with Potter having a good back-four.

Both Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk have been rather impressive this season, with only Dan Burn and Leon Balogun struggling to do much.

It’s why a move for Matt Clarke makes a lot of sense with the Brighton and Hove Albion Independent reporting that the club is keen on a move. The Portsmouth youngster has done very well over the course of the season and with just one year left on his current deal, it leaves him open to a move.

It’s why Brighton should swoop in, as the 22-year-old would help improve an already impressive backline. His age combined with his defensive maturity and intelligence makes him a brilliant move but his ambition will help the Seagulls.

They need players who are willing to fit for their place on the team-sheet and more than anything, Clarke has done that. His performances this season have been incredibly consistent, with the 22-year-old playing every single League One game.

Conclusion

Brighton need reinforcements and slowly but steadily they will get the players they need at the club, but Potter needs to make sure that Matt Clarke is one of them.

The 22-year-old will help shore up Brighton’s backline and with time, he will become a first-team star.
