Brighton breaking the club record to land this prolific £17.8m star would end their attacking woes next season

Brighton opinion: The Seagulls have to win the race for Leandro Trossard

According to Sky Sports, Brighton have had a bid rejected for Leandro Trossard. The Seagulls are not the only side in the race but are the only ones to have had a bid rejected for the prolific 24-year-old star. However, talks between the two clubs are still on, with Genk demanding £17.8m.

But given the demand for Trossard’s signature, with Arsenal also in the race, this is a move that Brighton have to make. Their downfall this season was simply incredible, with the club falling four places in the span of eight games.

It was spectacular and surprising, which is why once Brighton were officially safe, the club sacked manager Chris Hughton. They have appointed former Swansea City boss Graham Potter as his replacement and given what Potter has done with his former sides, it’s a rather exciting one.

But even before he takes charge of his very first game, Potter has a lot of work to do. He has inherited a mid-table defensive line but a relegation-threatened front-line, which needs to change.

Barring Glenn Murray, no one even came close to hitting double figures in goals in the Premier League, with centre-back Shane Duffy their second highest scorer.

Not to mention, Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s terrible debut season has left the club in shambles.

Trossard, on the other hand, has been impeccably brilliant for KRC Genk, contributing to 33 goals this season. Out of that, he’s netted 22 himself and it shows a massive improvement when compared to his previous performances.

Of the 22 goals, 8 have come in the Europa League and it shows his ability to step up in a bigger league/tournament.

The Genk forward is a direct and rapid winger but more importantly, Leandro Trossard is someone who loves getting into attacking positions.

This has been on show on more than one occasion this season. The Genk forward puts his pace and agility to great use both offensively and defensively, which is just what Brighton need right now.

Brighton need reinforcements if they are to survive the Premier League next season after their struggles this season.

Their club record signing struggled to make an impact last season and while Leandro Trossard would cost a pretty penny, the 24-year-old is arguably the best option that the Seagulls could buy next season.
