Bournemouth opinion: Should the Cherries sign Johannes Eggestein

Bournemouth had a terrific start to the Premier League, losing just two out of their first ten games of the season. However, injuries and other factors played a part, with Eddie Howe and his men falling out of the top half of the table as fast as they made it up.

But manager Eddie Howe does know that the club needs reinforcements as they enter next season. While the club does have the potential to be a top half club, they’ll have to invest before that actually happens.

However, with Callum Wilson’s future in doubt (Guardian), a striker should be a part of Bournemouth’s future transfer plans. Their defence has had a few issues, while the midfield also needs to be reinforced.

However, with Jordon Ibe and Junior Stanislas’ issues with form and injuries, manager Eddie Howe needs to make sure that he adds another winger.

Neither Ibe nor Stanislas has managed to make an impact this season, with the former Liverpool man struggling since his move from Anfield a few years ago.

Hence, Bournemouth should target Werder Bremen star Johannes Eggestein. The 20-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season, and that makes a move even more mouth-watering.

A versatile player, Eggestein can play anywhere across the front line and even as a number 10.

However, the 20-year-old’s preferred position is as a right-winger, which shows exactly where his talent lies. That isn’t to say that he can’t play as a centre-forward, with Eggestein scoring a remarkable 74 goals in 76 appearances for Bremen’s youth teams.

But since his senior appearance for the club, the 20-year-old has played mostly as a winger. Like Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and even David Brooks, Johannes Eggestein is also very quick off the mark and extremely intelligent.

That combined with his finishing, his tactical awareness and his movement off the ball make the German a very dangerous player. Given Bournemouth’s problems this season, that’s something that they need along with the 20-year-old’s unpredictability.

The German does have his weakness, one of which is his strength on the ball, with defenders finding it very easy to outmuscle Johannes Eggestein.
That could be a small problem given the ferocity of the Premier League, but the German has shown his ability to adapt to situations.
