Manchester United Player Ratings vs Southampton

Manchester United’s supporters must be thinking what is going on with the team. After defeating their greatest rivals away from home, 1-0 at Liverpool and then end up losing 1-0 at home to Southampton.

The Red Devil’s didn’t deserve to win this game as yet again they didn’t create enough chances. Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney collectively had just one touch of the ball in opposite penalty box and with many United supporters leaving Old Trafford, new signing Charlie Austin ghosted in the penalty box and headed Southampton in front with only his second shot in the game.

United tried to get back to level terms but couldn’t do much as Ronald Koeman made it three wins on the bounce for the Saints while the boo boys were back for Louis van Gaal. We look back at another disappointing display by the Red Devils and provide the player ratings.

David de Gea – 7/10

The goalkeeper couldn’t really do much to keep Austin’s header out but didn’t really have to do much else, did however, save low from a Romeu shot late on in the game.

Matteo Darmian – 6/10

The Italian had a good game in defence for United but had to leave on the hour mark after sustaining an injury.

Chris Smalling – 7/10

Nothing much to talk about here, Smalling had another good game for United in defence.

Daley Blind – 6/10

The Dutch defender did well with the ball at his feet as he was part of a back three but didn’t have a lot of movement to help him out.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson – 7/10

Had a good game in defence and is growing in confidence for Manchester United.

Marouane Fellaini – 5/10

The tree in the middle of the park, Fellaini didn’t provide United much in attack and was substituted with Juan Mata in the second half. He is  a player who makes us wonder what he is even trying to do in the middle of the park.

Morgan Schneiderlin – 6/10

He had a good game in midfield but one moment he switched off and Charlie Austin was free to nod in the winner.

Ander Herrera – 6/10

A work horse in the midfield, Herrera was as busy as a bee; he often linked up with the attack but couldn’t provide that killer ball tonight.

Wayne Rooney – 5/10

Couldn’t do much in the game and had a rather subdued performance against Southampton, after scoring in successive games for the team.

Anthony Martial – 6/10

The change in formation was to give Martial a better run down the middle but that failed to provide any real spark for the team and for the French attacker.

Substitutes:

Juan Mata – 6/10

He was one of the bright sparks for Manchester United and should have probably started against Southampton.

Paddy McNair – 6/10

Was brought on to replace Darmian in the second half and did well.

Adnan Januzaj – NA

Didn’t really have a lot of time to stamp his authority in the game.
