The hunt for the next Arsenal big money signing is on. After Arsene Wenger procured Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in successive summers, Arsenal fans will be busy imagining which big name player could be headed to the Gunners this season.
Arsenal have needed a lot of reinforcements for a few positions, but one position stands out more than the others and that is the role of a striker. Arsenal currently have Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck as the only out and out strikers, though Welbeck didn’t have a really good season for the Gunners and Giroud was decent for the duration that he was fit but missed a few games with injury.
Arsenal are in the running to sign two Real Madrid strikers, one former and one current, while Gonzalo Higuain’s Napoli didn’t qualify for the Champions League and saw their manager leave for Real Madrid. Karim Benzema played almost second or third fiddle to Ronaldo and Bale at Madrid and both players could be looking for a fresh challenge away from their current clubs.
French or Argentine?
Arsenal have money to spend, that much is a certainty but who they spend it on trying to improve their attack is the biggest question on the mind of Arsene Wenger. Both Higuain and Benzema are in the prime of their careers and while both haven’t set the world alight with their scoring ability, they have scored a good number of goals for their respective clubs over the years.
Higuain and Benzema are 27-years-old and both like to play down the middle for the team, while Higuain is an out and out centre forward, Benzema has had to deputise in the wide areas to accommodate other players at Real Madrid. Benzema also is the better goal scorer per season as he has averaged more than 20 goals per season in the last 5 years. Higuain on the other hand, scored just 18 goals this season and if we are to compare the moods of both players, Higuain could be the one who wants to move away from Napoli in search of Champions League football.
The real issue would be who is a better player for Arsenal. The Gunners need someone who can play in a number of positions and if that is the sole criteria then Benzema wins by a mile. The French striker can play on the wings and can also take an attacking midfielder’s role if it comes to that. The other aspect we need to harp upon is the role of Olivier Giroud at the club. Arsenal would like to pair Giroud with another striker and Benzema would be the ideal striking option if a choice was made between him and Higuain.
Both players would cost Arsenal around huge money, but if we were to put our money for Arsenal, it would go all on Benzema, he is French as well, so that would be a big bonus for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger, what the transfer window holds for Arsenal, we will just have to wait and watch.
