Recent reports have suggested that Everton striker Romelu Lukaku could be making a shock move back to Stamford Bridge over the transfer window. The Belgian forward has been in sizzling form for the Toffees this season and Chelsea are eyeing up an alternative to first choice front-man Diego Costa.
Lukaku was keen on returning to Chelsea last year but a move to his former club stalled over contract talks but the big centre-forward has set his heart on returning back to the London club.
And Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur has stated,
“Lukaku wants the move, he wants to play Champions League football – maybe Europa League football,”. The Merseyside club could struggle to achieve either this season with intense competition in the league and Lukaku could look to join another club.
“I don’t think they will put in a release clause [in his contract], they will make a gentlemen’s agreement that if there’s a £60m bid from Chelsea for instance, he’s still dreaming of Chelsea. Then Everton might allow him to go.” Terreur explained further.
Everton signed Lukaku from Chelsea in 2015 and Conte would love to have a powerful presence like him at the top if Diego Costa is injured or leaves the club. Also, Lukaku could add firepower and depth to Chelsea’s attacking options as they look to push for the Premier League title.
Costa has reportedly received an offer from China which could see him earning upto £30 million a year if he signs. However, it is highly unlikely that the deal will take place after Costa is enjoying a successful season at Stamford Bridge.
