According to a report from Mundo Deportivo (h/t Marca), La Liga giants Barcelona are keen on retaining their loanee Marc Cucurella from SD Eibar. The left-back is on loan at Eibar, who will exercise their option to buy him permanently, following which Barcelona will activate a buy-back clause worth €4million.
The Spaniard was hailed as the successor to Jordi Alba even before he made it to the senior team. An academy product of the Blaugrana and a regular for the reserves, Cucurella made his first-team debut in 2017.
Upon joining Eibar on a season-long loan, the 20-year-old made an immediate impact and played a key role for his side’s success.
His notable performance was against Real Madrid when he provided two key assists to thrash the defending UCL champions 3-0. The Basque Country club is now 13th in the La Liga table and Cucurella’s contribution will not be taken for granted.
Meanwhile, the Blaugrana are benefitting greatly from their left-defender Jordi Alba week in and week out. One of the very hard-working players for Ernesto Valverde, the 30-year-old has bagged 3 goals and 8 assists this season, making him one of the best left-backs in Europe at present.
But Valverde hasn’t planned any contingencies for the former Valencia man. Juan Miranda, a player from the reserves, was promoted to the first-team earlier this season to provide cover for Alba but he also didn’t last long. Even in terms of rotation, Valverde has gone with the right-back Nelson Semedo to occupy the left flank.
Given this, Barca should consider Cucurella, as he is the perfect second-choice player for Alba.

Cucurella holds the typical Spaniard archetype, with the blend of skills and pace. He was even deployed as a wide midfielder this season by Eibar.
It is true that Barca need a back-up for Alba. But they should consider buying back Cucurella from Eibar instead of splurging on some others in the transfer window.
