Manchester United opinion: Should the Red Devils sign Nicolo Barella?

According to reports from the Sun, Manchester United have joined the race for Serie A starlet Nicolo Barella. The 21-year-old has been beyond impressive over the last few seasons for Cagliari and that has seen the likes of Arsenal (Tuttomercatoweb) and now Manchester United take a keen interest.

However, despite his performances and raw talent, the Italian midfielder is yet to be scooped up by a bigger side. However, given the interest as mentioned above, that seems to be a matter of who will rather than when.

For Manchester United, it’s the perfect move, especially given the disarray in their midfield. They do have the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Fred and Scott McTominay at their disposal.

However, Pogba has been heavily linked with a move away, Herrera has been linked with PSG and Matic has been one of their worst players alongside Fred. That leaves them with the 22-year-old Scott McTominay and he’s yet to nail down a first-team berth.

It why a move for Barella right now would reinforce their side and the 22-year-old would slot right in. Called the next Steven Gerard (Sun), the 22-year-old has been a standout star for Cagliari. His defensive ability without a doubt incredible and it is not even what Barella has come to be known for.

So far this season, he has averaged 2.7 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1.6 fouls per game, which is downright incredible. Barring Ashley Young and Ander Herrera when it comes to interceptions, no Manchester United player even comes close to matching Barella.

This shows just how immense Nicolo Barella could be and his offensive statistics are promising too. His passing is at a reliable 82% and he creates 1.2 key passes and averages 3.1 long passes a game (Whoscored).

Barring Paul Pogba no other midfielder has averaged more key passes per game for Manchester United, with Matic, Fred and Pogba producing more long passes. Once again, it outlines why the move would be perfect and where he would slot in.

Nicolo Barrella’s aggression may need to be toned down a little, but that’s exactly what will help him adjust to the Premier League.

Conclusion

Nicolo Barella is Italy’s future and he needs to be Manchester United’s too, especially if the Red Devils are to succeed in the near future.

The 21-year-old has a bright bright future and one that that would be perfectly suited to the Premier League. Like most youngsters, he has a lot to improve on but with time, that should happen.
