Hibernian 2-0 Celtic: Hoops suffer shock defeat away from home

Celtic failed to make it to the top of the table in the Scottish Premiership as the Bhoys went down 2-0 to Hibernian at Easter Road on Sunday.

The home side showed more intent right from the kick-off and took the lead inside the opening minute of the game, with Emerson Hyndman and Oli Shaw moving the ball from left to right for Slivka, who cut inside Jozo Simunovic to sweep a shot beyond Craig Gordon.

Celtic pushed for the equaliser and James Forrest provided that inspiration in the final third. He drew a save from the Hibernian goalkeeper and put some dangerous balls into the box but Odsonne Edouard couldn’t find the net with a simple tap-in from close range.

Things could have gone from bad to worse for Brendan Rodgers’ side as Stevie Mallan’s free-kick was tipped away by Craig Gordon in the first half. Mallan once again came close in the second half, only to have his dipping long-range effort saved by the veteran shot-stopper.

Hibernian went two up just before the hour-mark as the hosts put the final nail in the coffin with a classic counter-attack which took shape from a Celtic corner. Sean Mackie’s diagonal ball was collected by Florian Kamberi, who lashed the ball past Gordon with a clinical finish.

Rodgers rung the changes to get back into the game and substitute Lewis Morgan had the best chance for the visitors but he fired agonisingly wide of the post.

The 2-0 defeat at the hands of a Hibernian unit that has struggled in recent weeks should be a major cause of concern for the manager given that Rangers claimed all three points earlier in the day with a 1-0 win over Hamilton.

Celtic are 3rd in the standings with 33 points, just a point behind league leaders Rangers, albeit with a game in hand. Quite clearly, the onus will be on the Bhoys to turn things around on Wednesday night when they play host to Motherwell.

Here’s how the Celtic fans reacted to the bitter loss:
