According to a report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a January swoop for Brentford star Ollie Watkins.
After going cold in the summer transfer window, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to freshen up his squad in January and has identified Ollie Watkins as a potential target.
Ollie Watkins is unquestionably one of the most exciting talents in the Championship and his fine form has continued this season as well, with six goals in 15 league games, resulting in Premier League interest. In fact, since moving to Brentford, the 22-year-old has made 60 appearances in all competitions and has scored 16 goals.
Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed their best start to a Premier League campaign this term, despite not spending a single penny in the summer transfer window.
One might argue that Mauricio Pochettino has a stable team capable of beating any given team on their day but deep down the lane, they haven’t looked convincing at times this season.
That could be down to a lack of investment in the transfer market which has stopped Spurs from competing with the Premier League heavyweights this season.
There are no doubts about their squad’s quality but to realistically compete with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea for the title, they have to show more ambition when it comes to signing players.
Tottenham can make a statement of intent midway through the season by signing Ollie Watkins, who is rated at more than £20m by Brentford, according to Sky Sports.
A technically-gifted versatile attacker, Watkins can play anywhere across the frontline. He has mostly been used on the left flank by Brentford this term, from where he has the tendency to drift inside onto his favoured right foot and have a pop at goal.
The 22-year-old possesses excellent vision and creativity, which allows him to create chances for his teammates. Watkins is skilful, possess good pace and sharp dribbling abilities that enable him to run at defenders and create problems.
He is a very direct player who can provide cover for first-choice striker Harry Kane, and can also play on the wings.
Signing a player of Watkins’ flexibility would give the Lilywhites a major boost for the second half of the season. At 22, he has his best years ahead of him and judging by his development in recent years, he will only get better from here on.
And working with a manager like Pochettino, who is known to get the best out of young talents, could be highly beneficial to Watkins’ development. Hence, Tottenham must do everything in their powers to sign Watkins from Brentford in January.
