According to Sport 24 (h/t The Birmingham Mail), Aston Villa are keen on a move for Austria Wien striker Christoph Monschein and could make their move for him in the January transfer window.
Christoph Monschein, 27, has scored 13 goals in 18 appearances for club and country this season. His goalscoring prowess has caught the attention of Aston Villa, who have been put off by his high asking price. (h/t The Birmingham Mail)
The report claims that Austria Wien are looking for €5m for their player described as their ‘super striker’. The Austrian club are enduring some financial problems and could look to offload the 27-year-old in January. That being said, Villa must look to take advantage of Austria Wien’s situation and bring in Monschein.
The Villans spent big to bring in Brazilian striker Wesley Moraes in the summer. It looked a decent signing for a player with bags of potential. He has scored 4 goals in 12 games for the club so far but has struggled to find consistent form. Barring Wesley, the Midlands club have very limited options up front.
Villa boss Dean Smith has already hinted that he’s keen to bolster his attacking ranks in the mid-season trading period. He wants to bring in a striker when the January window opens, with Keinan Davis’ injury leaving only Wesley and Jonathan Kodjia to compete for the centre-forward role.
To put things into perspective, Christoph Monschein could be a good signing for Villa. Monschein has shown his goalscoring prowess for Austria Wien this season, bagging 13 goals in all competitions.
However, he hasn’t played for Austria in his career and that could be a worry for Villa, who would want to maintain their top-flight status.
It is probably not a huge surprise that Villa are looking at signing a striker in January. Wesley has been decent considering this is his first season in English football, but Smith surely needs greater depth in that area.
Monschein’s arrival would see the Villans add to their striker options. However, there is a massive difference in quality between the Austrian league and the Premier League, meaning it won’t be easy for him to replicate his performances in England.
Regardless of the 27-year-old lacking experience at the highest level, Aston Villa must take a gamble on him in January.
