Aston Villa Opinion: Why the Villans should go for Martin Dubravka?

According to a report from the Daily Star, Premier League newbies Aston Villa are leading the race for Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, as he looks to leave Tyneside in a time of unrest.

However, the Villans will face stern competition in the race to sign the 30-year-old shot-stopper. Tottenham are hoping to bring the Slovakian in as a back-up goalkeeper, while Manchester United will target him if first-choice keeper David De Gea doesn’t extend his deal.

Dubravka has also generated interest across Europe, with FC Porto and AS Monaco keen to snap him up, the report adds.

But with Dubravka hoping to stay in the Premier League, Aston Villa must do everything to their powers to win the race for his signature.

Dean Smith is in the market for a new goalkeeper to provide competition for Jed Steer, who established himself as the club’s first-choice during the second half of last season.

Steer played a crucial role in getting Villa promoted to the Premier League, via the play-offs. Now, he has signed a new four-year contract with the Midlands club.

As far as Lovre Kalinic is concerned, he has endured a disappointing spell since arriving at Villa Park during the January transfer window. Injury saw the Croatian lose his place to Jed Steer and after recovering, failed to oust the Englishman.

His place is under severe threat and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Smith offloads him this summer, just six months after signing him from KAA Gent.

With Orjan Nyland having falling down the pecking order after suffering a ruptured Achilles in December, the newly-promoted Premier League club could do a good job by signing Dubravka from Newcastle.

Dubravka has proved a fan favourite on Tyneside following his switch in January 2018 from Sparta Prague. He kept 11 clean sheets in the Premier League last season and had been in talks over an extension at Newcastle before manager Rafael Benitez’s exit.

The Slovakia international has shone in his time in the Premier League so far and a proven top-flight performer between the sticks would be ideal for the Villans right now.

Despite being a fan favourite and a first-team regular at St. James’ Park, Dubravka may be ready to move on after a year and a half, as he apparently doesn’t want to be a part of managerless Newcastle in this difficult period at St James’ Park.

Verdict

The 30-year-old shot-stopper is rated at £12m but with only weeks left before the August 8 transfer deadline, Aston Villa must act fast and bring him in to boost their goalkeeping department ahead of the new campaign.
