Aston Villa opinion: Villans in for Charlie Austin – Good move?

According to Birmingham Live, Premier League new boys Aston Villa are still interested in making a move for Southampton striker Charlie Austin this summer.

The 29-year-old former QPR striker, who has been on the bench for the latter half of the season under Ralph Hasenhuttl, could be given the green light by Southampton to leave this summer. (h/t Birmingham Live)

The Englishman has a contract at St.Mary’s until next summer, hence, it would make sense for Saints to let him go this summer for some money rather than let him go for free in 12 months time.

On the other hand, Aston Villa, under Dean Smith, are eagerly looking to improve their squad (h/t Birmingham Live) after sneaking promotion via a playoff final over Derby County. Here’s why signing Austin would be good for their squad:

Austin’s experience and goal return may help the Villans

If we look at the record of Charlie Austin in the past six years, he has been pretty good when given regular opportunities on the field to make his mark.

In his three-and-half-seasons at Southampton, the 29-year-old has managed to score 16 goals in 71 appearances (a good chunk of appearances coming from the bench), which is just about decent given the fact that the Saints have been a team who struggle to create enough chances.

However, if we look at Austin’s record when he was with QPR in the Premier League back in the 2014/15 season, the Englishman scored 18 goals in 35 appearances and was one of the star names at Loftus Road.

Hence, to sum up, it is clear that the striker has enough potential to find the back of the net if chances are created for him. He is generally good in the opposition box and now has the experience of playing in England’s top-flight for some time now.

Conclusion

Hence, Aston Villa are right in pursuing the possibility of signing Charlie Austin this summer. It could work very well in their favour and his experience would be quite helpful in their Premier League journey.
