Why James Tavernier would be a smart signing for Aston Villa

According to a report from The Daily Star, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are interested in signing Rangers right-back Aston Villa.

James Tavernier, 27, is one of the best right-backs in the Scottish Premiership and is a key figure in Steven Gerrard’s Rangers team. Newcastle, who are keen for a right-back, are interested in the Rangers defender as well as in Aston Villa’s Ahmed Elmohamady.

The Magpies manager Steve Bruce has already signed Elmohamady twice before and could be looking to make it a hat-trick. If Elmohamady moves to Newcastle, then Aston Villa must surely make a move for James Tavernier to replace the Egyptian.

The Villans have shown a lot of ambition in the transfer market upon their return to the Premier League back in May, splashing heavily to secure the signatures of 12 players.

Dean Smith, however, should aim to add a couple of players more before Thursday’s transfer deadline. Thus, there would be no harm in luring away one of the Scottish Premier League’s best players in Tavernier.

Tavernier is not only the inspirational skipper of Gerrard’s Rangers team, but he is also a remarkable source of goals and assists from the right-hand side. In all competitions last season, the Englishman produced 20 assists and 17 goals, although most of those came from the penalty spot.

Blessed with a solid turn of pace and agility, the ex-Newcastle man loves to venture forward and deliver teasing crosses into the box. The 27-year-old isn’t the most defensively solid full-back but he fits the mould of an ideal modern-day full-back. He will undoubtedly be a solid addition to Villa backline as he has enough quality to help them at both ends of the pitch.

The 27-year-old could prove to be an ideal replacement for Elmohamady and challenge Frederic Guilbert for the right-back slot in the new season. Tavernier is at the peak of his powers and his European experience and leadership skills could come in handy for Dean Smith’s Villa side.

Verdict

Given that Tavernier is contracted at the Ibrox until the summer of 2022, Rangers are in a strong position to reject any potential offers.

However, if his head is turned by the prospect of Premier League football they may have to let him go this summer. All in all, the right-back could prove to be a top addition to Villa’s backline.
