According to a report in the Guardian, Marcelo is looking to leave Real Madrid and Arsenal are sniffing in. The Brazilian left-back lost his place in the first-team last season under Julen Lopetegui and Santi Solari but has still got a few years at the very highest level in him.
Despite playing a few more games towards the end of the season under Zinedine Zidane, it is fair to say that it might be time to move on from Real Madrid after the Los Blancos signed French International Ferland Mendy from Lyon.
The 31-year-old has spent 12 seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu and will go down as legend for the club during a very successful period. A few years back, he was undoubtedly the best left-back in the world. The Brazilian is known for his exceptional close-control, dribbling and crossing ability.
Despite not being the best defensive player in the world, Marcelo has always been a tough cookie. This was especially the case when he played under Jose Mourinho, where Marcelo would often have disciplinary issues.
He was famed for his link-up with all-time great Cristiano Ronaldo. Marcelo has spent many years at the pinnacle of world football and could perhaps be looking for a new challenge.
The Brazilian would be open with welcome arms in the Premier League due to his colourful personality but more importantly because of his fantastic footballing ability.
Arsenal are desperately looking for reinforcements throughout the team. The area that Arsenal need the biggest upgrade in is midfield. They could start by looking at left-back.
Nacho Montreal is on the verge of leaving the club and Sead Kolasinac is more of a wing-back than a full-back. Marcelo is getting older but he’s still a very talented footballer and players with such great technique can always play in other positions.
Marcelo could easily re-invent himself as a winger or an attacking midfielder and would help provide some versatility to Arsenal in his later years like his compatriot Dani Alves has.
There’s also the possibility that he could prolong his club career by not playing for the national side, as was the case in the Copa America even though this was the case cause of an injury.
