According to reports from the Mirror, Borussia Dortmund are ready to let Arsenal target Julian Weigl go this summer. With the Gunners chasing after a new midfielder after losing Aaron Ramsey, to hear that one of their targets has been told that he can leave is a massive stroke of luck.
And that is something that the club really needs to take advantage of, especially given the other issues. Lucas Torreira’s future is in doubt with AC Milan chasing the Uruguayan midfielder, especially now that they’ve appointed Marco Giampaolo.
The former Sampdoria manager played a massive part in Lucas Torreira’s development and that has just intensified the links. However, while the 23-year-old has already revealed that he will be staying at the club, things could change.
To make things even worse, Granit Xhaka has also been linked with a move to replace the outgoing Rodri.
That makes thing even more complicated but that is exactly where Julian Weigl enters the fray, especially given his skill-set. The definition of a regista, Weigl has attributes of both Xhaka and Torreira, all brought together into one rather impressive package.
He made his debut nearly four years ago at the age of 19, playing the full season for the club. Since then, the German has only grown in stature and talent, making him among the best deep-lying playmakers in his age group.
That combined with his incredible defensive nuance, as witnessed by him deputising in central defence would help Arsenal.
The 23-year old’s composure and ability to find a pass has made him a key part of Borussia Dortmund teams in the past, making 140 appearances for the black and yellows.
A very intelligent player, Weigl would fit perfectly in Unai Emery’s midfield alongside Matteo Guendouzi and whoever replaces Aaron Ramsey. Things are changing for Arsenal and if they do lose both Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira, they should go after Julian Weigl.
As mentioned above, the 23-year-old has the best of both worlds and is an upgrade over Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny. Sure, he would have some trouble adjusting to the more physical Premier League, but with time, there is no doubt that he will have a great impact.

Things could get really bad for Arsenal if they lose Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira. Replacing them could prove to be a rather troublesome task but by adding Julian Weigl, it will help ease the transition but also help the club move forward.
