Arsenal and Chelsea Stars Feature in the List of Top 5 Defenders with Most Defensive Errors this Season

Share

The game of football is slowly and gradually assuming the form of something that is more about goals than anything else. The likes of Jamie Carragher, Nemanja Vidic, Tony Adams and Sol Campbell belonged to a dying breed of defenders that aren’t found in any corner of the world right now. They were leaders, people who knew how to command players around them and had exceptional and renowned leadership skills that inspired their teammates and acted as a propelling force for them. And as the death for such players goes on increasing, we see the game becoming more about goals and goalscorers.

And to lay more focus on this, we have a look at Premier League defenders who have committed the most number of defensive errors this season. Here are the top five of them:

Aaron Cresswell- West Ham United (3 errors)

The 25-year-old, who enjoyed an impressive breakout season under Sam Allardyce last season has been a revelation since arriving from Ipswich Town but hasn’t quite been that effective this season. He’s made more defensive errors than any other Premier League defender, and 2 out of three of them have led to goals. Once tipped to play for England last year, Cresswell hasn’t quite lived up to the hype that once surrounded him.

Nacho Monreal- Arsenal( 2 errors)

Nacho Monreal

The Arsenal left-back has enjoyed a solid season, with Arsenal currently as high as 2nd in the Premier League table right now. He has been one of Arsenal’s key performers in defense, with most of the other defensive players falling prey to niggling injuries, but Monreal has featured in every single game for the Gunners. He has made 2 defensive errors, but none have resulted in a goal. Apart from that, the Spaniard has made 7 defensive actions.

Seamus Coleman- Everton( 2 errors)

The Everton right-back shone as brightly as he could in the 2013-14 season when the Toffees finished 5th in the Premier League. The previous season was something that let him down and this season hasn’t been too good for him too. He’s made two defensive errors, with none of them leading to goals, but the Northern Irishman hasn’t been particularly good for the Toffees.

Craig Dawson- West Brom (2 errors)

The 25-year-old Englishman has been a solid centre-half for West Brom ever since he joined the club Rochdale in 2009. A pivotal part of the West Brom defense that is so well organized under Tony Pulis that they’re tough to break down. He has made 8 defensive actions this season but has made 2 defensive actions with none of them leading to goals. Alongside the likes of Gareth McAuley and Chris Brunt in defense, Dawson has been a vital part of the Baggies defense.

Branislav Ivanovic- Chelsea (2 errors)

Branislav Ivanovic

One of Chelsea’s most disappointing performers this season, the 31-year-old Serbian has given the impression of not having an idea what he’s doing. He’s been way off the mark and whatever he achieved last season has gone up in smoke. The Serbian has made 2 errors with one of them leading to a goal and has been a mere shadow of his real self, without any speck of doubt. Much like teammates such as Eden Hazard, John Terry and Nemanja Matic, Ivanovic’s stock has fallen to a significant degree.
