The Premier League always has a knack of producing some quality youngsters and their answer this season was Manchester United star Marcus Rashford. The English youngster has had a breakthrough season where he established himself as a part of the senior national squad for the Three Lions.
There are very few players of his age taking such strides and one such player is Danish starlet Kasper Dolberg. The 19-year old has had a stellar season for Dutch giants Ajax and is one of the most wanted stars in Europe at the moment. Both players had identical seasons but who had more of an impact? Let’s find out.
With 16 goals and 6 assists all season in the Dutch league, Dolberg was one of the best players in the Eredivisie last season, creating 28 chances and picking up 22 key passes to his name. Rashford also scored 5 Premier League goals this season to add to his single assist. However, he only created 19 chances, with 18 key passes to his name.
Dolberg scored 6 goals and 6 assists in the Europa League, compared to just 2 goals and 2 assists from Rashford. The 19-year old from Ajax beats Rashford in almost every element of the game, in terms of numbers at least. With a take-on success rate of 65.75%, Dolberg was far more effective in one on one situations compared to Rashford, who had a success rate of just 46.43%. In fact, in the European competition, Dolberg had a take-on success rate of 93.33%, which is right up there with the best.
The Manchester United man was deployed on the wings at times by Mourinho but he mostly played as a target man for United. However, in a similar environment in the Europa League, Rashford, who played 150 minutes less than the Dane, won just 20% of his aerial duels and just 43% of his total duels. The Ajax sensation won 40.48% of his duels in the air, winning 54.05% of his total duels.
The Dutch Eredivisie may not be as competitive as the Premier League but at the European stage as well, Kasper Dolberg established himself as one of the most exciting youngsters up for show in Europe. With AS Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe, Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus and Ajax’s Kasper Dolberg, the future of football is in some safe hands.
But who has impressed you the most, Dolberg or Rashford?
