Three Signings That Would Improve Ipswich Town Next Season

Its feeding time for the agents of Championship clubs, this being a league where at least 10-14 teams believe they have a shot at the title and automatic promotion to the Premier League.

In the Tractor Boys’ case, they not only need to improve on last season but may also have to cover significant losses – Tom Lawrence being a potentially major loss.

Adam Webster is another who has been outstanding for the club over the past year and will attract bids from various clubs that Ipswich will do very well to resist. Here we look at three players who could help them to achieve their play-off goals and give them a chance of Premier League football in a year’s time.

Danny Guthrie (Blackburn Rovers)

Hear me out on this one. An underrated quality in the Championship, just as in any league, is for players to be comfortable enough on the ball as to not be hurried out of possession. Keeping possession is a massive quality to have and in Danny Guthrie, the club would be signing a player with one of the best pass completion rates in the division.

When you consider that his stats were achieved playing for a relegated team means two things; first of all his stats will look even better when playing higher up the league with better teammates and secondly, he will be available on a cut-price deal with Blackburn desperate to balance the books following their demotion to League One.

Joe Garner (Rangers)

The Rangers man is on a list of players coach Pedro Caixinha is willing to let go, but there’s little doubt he could do a fine job for Ipswich Town. The Blackburn-born front man has scored 100 league goals now at various levels and would bring great experience to the side, possibly in support of Murphy.

Daryl Murphy (Newcastle United)

Ipswich’s former striker moved to Newcastle last year to help them win promotion, and the Republic of Ireland international did a fine job when called upon.

As expected, his chances were limited on Tyneside though and he will be moved on this summer and it would make perfect sense for Ipswich to take him back. Newcastle paid £3million for his services just 12 months ago and the player has clearly retained all of his ability.  I’m not suggesting Ipswich have left that money burning a hole in their pockets, but paying only 50% – 66% of it back to Newcastle to get him back seems wise.
