Forget It Klopp – Why Liverpool Would Be Insane In Trying To Sign This Free-agent From Manchester City

Why Liverpool Should Avoid Signing Gael Clichy

Jurgen Klopp has managed to take Liverpool to the Champions League next season in what was his first full campaign in England. He helped Liverpool finish 4th in the points table, with a relatively weak squad but is now making sure that he improves his squad. One position he should take extra care of is the left-back position.

Klopp used James Milner there and the veteran English midfielder did a great job at both ends of the field. Spanish star Alberto Moreno was not able to impress Klopp and is expected to be sold this summer and reports have suggested that they are looking at former Manchester City star Gael Clichy.

Pep Guardiola used the French international regularly last season but he decided to let the 31-year old leave the club for free. Clichy is an experienced defender who loves to sit back and help his backline. He is adventurous and can put in a superb cross, but is not a player Liverpool can depend on, to provide width in the attack.

Certain reports suggest that the Reds are ready to offer him a two-year deal and though such rumours were later squashed, there is every chance that they might look at him as a possible option next season.

The 31-year former Arsenal defender has great experience to show for and is one of the most dependable full-backs in the league. He is defensive minded and is sure to improve the backline of most teams he walks into.

But Liverpool already have such a player in James Milner, who hardly put a foot wrong at the back all season. The Reds need a genuine left-back who fits their intense style of play. They need an energetic player who can make numerous runs up and down the flank and Clichy is not the answer.

He could have been the player for Liverpool to shut shop but if they can spend on a genuine left-back who can be the first choice for Klopp, Milner himself can play that role. The Englishman’s versatility will be used by Klopp next season so it does not make any sense for them to spend on another left-back, who is only expected to fill in when needed.

What Liverpool need is a first choice left-back at the prime of his game and Klopp needs to dig deep in the transfer market and should avoid signing Clichy, even if it is for free.
