Why Man United parting ways with Matteo Darmian looks ideal for all parties

According to The Sun, Italian right-back Matteo Darmian looks set to end his lacklustre spell at Man United, with the report suggesting that the 29-year-old is the subject of widespread interest from a lot of clubs in his homeland. 

The Sun understands that Roma are amongst the favourites to land the defender, while AC Milan and Fiorentina are also interested in securing his services. 

Darmian, though, is not the only defender at Old Trafford who seems to be on the move this summer, with the same report claiming that centre-back Chris Smalling is also poised to complete a switch to Roma on a season-long loan deal. 

The 29-year-old Italian international, who joined the Red Devils from Torino for a fee of £12.7 million back in 2015, played regularly in the Premier League in his first couple of seasons at Old Trafford before slipping down the pecking order since the start of the 2017-18 campaign. 

Darmian has featured on only 13 occasions for United since December 2017, which is a clear reflection of the fact that his dream move to Man United hasn’t gone according to the script. 

Along with Phil Jones, Smalling and Fred, the 36-cap Italian international has yet to feature in any of the matchday squads in the Premier League thus far this term, with several of last season’s players lost in the cold after a summer of heavy investment at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent splashed the cash to bring in the likes of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Leicester City and Crystal Palace respectively to shore up his porous backline and Darmian is apparently not a part of the Norwegian’s plans moving forward. 

The 29-year-old, who is in the last year of his contract at Old Trafford, could be stuck in limbo if a move elsewhere fails to materialize before Monday’s deadline, whilst United are also expected to be open to getting him off their books. 

While Darmian desperately needs a switch this summer in a bid to resurrect his faltering career and regain his place in Italy’s international setup, the Red Devils face the risk of losing him for absolutely nothing next summer.

United are likely to be aware of that and with interest in the full-back high before the deadline, it won’t be a surprise to see them parting ways with the 29-year-old very soon.

To put things into perspective, this is United’s last chance to cut their losses on the 29-year-old and recoup a portion of the money that they had previously spent to bring him to the club.

Truth be told, not many would lament his departure from Old Trafford after a rather frustrating spell in which he has clearly failed to live up to the expectations. 

United lost Antonio Valencia this summer but with Wan-Bissaka impressing in the opening few weeks and Diogo Dalot already at the club as a useful back-up, it is easy to see that Darmian is surplus to requirements.

Moreover, United have the experience of Ashley Young, who is capable of providing valuable cover on either side of the backline.

Still only 29, a move back to his homeland could potentially work in favour of Darmian’s career, as he looks to rediscover his old mojo after a rather lean spell in England.

He had reached great heights at Torino earlier in his career and a return to familiar surroundings might just prove to be the opening that he needs to find his feet back.

All in all, this move seemingly suits the interests of all parties involved and Man United need to cash in on their underperforming star at the earliest.
