A good start to the PL season but Tottenham need to strengthen these 2 positions in January

2 Positions Tottenham need to strengthen in January

Tottenham Hotspur, for the first time in the Premier League era, didn’t sign any player in the summer transfer window. The likes of Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Davinson Sanchez signed their respective contract extensions but the lack of new signings has left Spurs with a squad that lacks depth. The starting XI for the north London club is as good as anyone in the league but eleven men don’t win the league, do they?

To challenge for the league and to play across four competitions, a talented squad of 23 players is needed and everyone is required to play their part throughout the season, no matter how big or small.

We look at two positions where Tottenham could use some strengthening in the winter transfer window that would aid them to finish the season strongly.

Left-back

Ben Davies is a quality left-back who has been consistently performing in the Premier League for the past two seasons. But with recent reports linking Danny Rose to a move abroad, Spurs might be left short of senior players in that area. September is almost here and with it comes the Champions League and the League Cup.

Danny Rose

The idea of Ben Davies starting 3 games in a week for the whole season just seems ridiculous. If he gets injured, Spurs would be forced to play either a kid from the academy or centre-back Vertonghen on the left-hand side.

Spurs’ latest winter signing, winger Lucas Moura from PSG took some time to settle in England but looks rejuvenated this season. This proves that buying a player midway through the season may be a risky move but comes good in the long run.

A new left-back signing in January will certainly provide competition as well as cover for Ben Davies at the club, if Danny Rose leaves the club.

Central midfield

According to the Sun, Sissoko is a transfer target for Fenerbache. If the player agrees to move to Turkey, it will be a huge headache for Pochettino. With Victor Wanyama just returning from a long-term injury, Spurs are left with only Dembele, Eric Dier, and Harry Winks as the senior midfielders in the squad.

Eric Dier

This is really alarming, considering Spurs will have to play almost 2 games a week from September until New Year’s Eve. An injury or suspension to any of them would derail the entire season for the Lilywhites. Daniel Levy should make sure it doesn’t come down to that.

To avoid the precarious situation, he needs to sanction the move for a midfield signing before the European knockout rounds begin in February next year.
