Why a fee of £10m for Jetro Willems would be a bargain for Newcastle

According to the Chronicle Live, Newcastle United are weighing up the possibility of completing a permanent deal for Eintracht Frankfurt loanee Jetro Willems, with the Magpies having a buy clause in the loan agreement. 

The 25-year-old Dutchman has made a promising start to life in the north-east of England since coming through the door on loan in the summer, having impressed the hierarchy at St. James’ Park with his rich vein of form early in the campaign. 

Willems, who has already made 5 appearances in the Premier Leauge, scored a sensational goal in the 3-1 defeat away at Liverpool and put in yet another solid shift at the back to guide the Magpies to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Man United heading into the international break. 

The powerful left-back started the season as an understudy to Matt Ritchie but an injury to the veteran has allowed him to enjoy plenty of involvement in the playing eleven

The 25-year-old has grabbed his opportunities with both hands to quickly establish himself as one of the standout performers in what has otherwise been a disappointing start to the campaign for the Magpies.

Interestingly, Willems’ strong performances early in the season have already prompted Newcastle to consider the possibility of acquiring his services on a permanent basis beyond the end of the current season. 

As per the report, the left-back has a release clause of £10million in his contract at Eintracht Frankfurt and with the Magpies holding the option to trigger the buy clause in the agreement, they might as well benefit from the fact that the clause they negotiated was on the back of an injury-hit season with Bundesliga side. 

To put things into perspective, Jetro Willems is as good as gold for a fee of £10 million and the Magpies would land themselves a massive bargain if they manage to iron out a permanent deal for the Dutchman in the coming months. 

Of course, such a deal would depend on how things pan out for the 25-year-old in the remainder of the campaign while ensuring survival in the Premier League is a must if Newcastle are to secure his services permanently. 

However, there is no denying the fact that Willems has already made a big impression at Tyneside and a fee of £10 million would definitely be a wonderful piece of business for a player who joined Frankfurt from PSV Eindhoven for £7 million in 2017. 

The former Sparta Rotterdam youth graduate, who burst on to the scene for The Netherlands as an 18-year-old in the UEFA Euro 2012, made a total of 192 appearances across six seasons for PSV Eindhoven before moving on Frankfurt and while his time in Germany has been plagued by injuries, Willems continues to be an impressive attacking full-back at the age of 25. 

Having racked up more than 250 career appearances at the senior professional level, the 22-cap Dutch international already boasts of envious CV for a player of his age and he still has plenty of offer at the highest level. 

Mike Ashley’s interest in developing players is well documented and Willems could possibly fetch a good resale value if the Magpies do opt to cash in on him in the future.
