The talk regarding Jose Mourinho signing up for Manchester United as a replacement for Louis van Gaal has cooled down a bit but it only seems inevitable that the Portuguese’s manager takes up from the Dutch master at the Manchester club.
There might be a move in the January transfer window if things don’t go right but for the sake of Mourinho he would want to spend a lot of time to understand the players that he has and how he can get the best out of them.
While Juan Mata must be sweating it out thinking about his future if Mourinho does sign for them – the Spaniard could well be sold once again under Mourinho – the manager has a habit of making his teams perform better and the players reciprocate that performance as well.
United have struggled to find any sort of form or rhythm under Van Gaal this season and most of them have performed well below par. Jose Mourinho could act as the catalyst to increase the performance levels of the players and here are five players who would love to work under Mourinho.
The one player who has struggled at United this season, more than others it seems. Wayne Rooney was one of the players that actually attracted the interest of Jose Mourinho during his time at Real and then at Chelsea in his second stint. Mourinho has always admired Rooney and maybe the English star needs Mourinho to work his magic and help him get the groove back, at least for his performances if not the goals.
2. Chris Smalling
The central defender certainly has gotten better under Louis van Gaal but if he does want to become one of the best defenders in the world, there is no one better for the job that Mourinho. The former Chelsea manager is known for making his teams play better defensively and the 26-year-old could well become one of the few players who enjoys his time under Jose Mourinho.
3. Bastian Schweinsteiger
The recently signed Bayern Munich star came with a lot of fanfare but hasn’t really done that well under old boss Louis van Gaal. The German international might not be the same player he was say five years back but Jose Mourinho has worked wonders with older players, John Terry being one and could certainly help Bastian find his form all over again.
4. Phil Jones
The English defender hasn’t had the greatest of times recently for Manchester United but if there is anyone who can make a player better or at least, a defender better it has to be Mourinho. Jones was once touted to be one of the best ever Manchester United players but that seems far from happening but Mourinho could be the special one who makes him the best defender in the league.
5. Marouane Fellaini
The midfielder hasn’t had the best of times when he signed for Manchester United though he was a David Moyes signing, his performances for the club have been a bit haphazard, partly due to the fact that he has been played out of position. The Belgian was one of the best defensive midfielders during his time at Everton and maybe a bit of Mourinho magic and defensive dynamism could help the midfielder.
